This lake is located in the Sawtooth Mountains, which are part of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area. Johnson Lake is known for its clear, cool water and peaceful surroundings.

Johnson Lake is an alpine lake. This means it is located high up in the mountains. It was formed by glaciers long ago. The lake sits at an elevation of about 8,010 feet (2,441 meters) above sea level.

Location and Surroundings

The lake is nestled within the Sawtooth Wilderness. This is a special protected area where nature is kept wild. To visit, you need a wilderness permit. You can get this permit at registration boxes found at trailheads or wilderness boundaries.

Lake Features

Johnson Lake is quite small. It is about 0.15 miles (0.24 km) long and 0.09 miles (0.14 km) wide. There is one tiny island in the lake. This island is about 70 feet (21 meters) long. Johnson Creek flows into and out of the lake. The water from Johnson Creek eventually reaches the Middle Fork Boise River.

Getting to the Lake

You can reach Johnson Lake by hiking. The trail starts from the Sawtooth National Forest. You will follow a cutoff from trail 459 along Johnson Creek. It is a great spot for adventurers who love the outdoors. Johnson Lake is located about 0.33 miles (0.53 km) downstream from another lake called The Hole.
