Jojo Moyes' Early Life and Career

Jojo Moyes was born in Maidstone, England, on August 4, 1969. Before she went to university, she had many different jobs. She worked as a typist, writing statements in braille for people who are blind. She also wrote brochures for a travel company and even worked briefly as a taxi dispatcher.

While studying at Royal Holloway, University of London, Jojo Moyes worked for a local newspaper. She later earned a journalism degree from City University. In 1992, she received a special scholarship from The Independent newspaper. This helped her study journalism even more. She then worked for The Independent for ten years. For one year, she worked in Hong Kong for the Sunday Morning Post. She became an Assistant News Editor in 1998. By 2002, she was the newspaper's Arts and Media Correspondent.

Jojo Moyes' Writing Journey

When Jojo Moyes first started writing books, her first three stories were not accepted by publishers. She had one child and another baby on the way. She decided that if her fourth book was also rejected, she would stop trying to be a novelist.

She sent the first three chapters of her fourth book to different publishers. Six of them wanted to publish her book! This was a big moment for her.

Jojo Moyes became a full-time novelist in 2002. That's when her first book, Sheltering Rain, was published. Even though she writes novels, she still writes articles for The Daily Telegraph newspaper.

The Success of Me Before You

In 2012, Jojo Moyes wrote a book called Me Before You. Her usual publisher did not want to publish it. So, she sold the book to Penguin. This book became a huge success! It sold six million copies and was the number one book in nine countries.

The success of Me Before You also made her older books popular again. At one point, three of her novels were on the New York Times bestseller list at the same time. She later wrote two more books that continued the story of Me Before You. These were After You in 2015 and Still Me in 2018.

In 2016, a movie based on Me Before You was released. Jojo Moyes herself wrote the screenplay for the film.

Helping Others Read

In 2018, Jojo Moyes helped fund a project called the Quick Reads Initiative. This project helps adults improve their reading skills. Her support gave the program three more years of funding. Her book Paris for One and Other Stories was part of the 2015 Quick Reads collection. She also wrote a short story for A Fresh Start, which was part of the 2020 Quick Reads collection.
