Jon William Embree (born October 15, 1965) is a well-known American football coach and former player. He currently works as the assistant head coach and tight ends coach for the Miami Dolphins in the National Football League (NFL). He used to be the head coach for the Colorado college team.
Before becoming a coach, Jon Embree played as a tight end for the Los Angeles Rams in the NFL. His playing career ended early due to an injury. He was chosen by the Rams in the sixth round of the 1987 NFL draft after playing college football at Colorado.
After his playing days, Embree worked in television. Then, in 1991, his former college coach, Bill McCartney, asked him to volunteer as a coach for the Colorado Buffaloes. Jon Embree was actually one of the first players McCartney recruited back in 1983. He later became the head coach for Colorado in 2011 and 2012. His time as head coach ended after the 2012 season.
Playing Days
Jon Embree started his college football journey at El Camino College Compton Center in Los Angeles. His talent led him to be picked by the Los Angeles Rams in the 1987 NFL Draft. He played for the Rams for two seasons.
Coaching Journey
Jon Embree has had a long and successful coaching career. He has coached at both the college and professional levels. He spent many years coaching at his old college, Colorado, in different roles.
He also coached for several NFL teams. These include the Kansas City Chiefs, Washington Redskins, Cleveland Browns, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and San Francisco 49ers. He often coached the tight ends, which is the position he played.
In 2011, he returned to the University of Colorado as their head coach. He coached the team for two seasons. After that, he continued coaching in the NFL. He joined the Miami Dolphins in 2022 as their assistant head coach and tight ends coach.
Family Life
Jon Embree comes from a family of football players. His father, John Embree, also played in the NFL as a wide receiver for the Denver Broncos in 1969 and 1970.
Jon grew up in Colorado and went to Cherry Creek High School near Denver. He is married to Natalyn, and they have three children. His sons, Taylor and Connor, also played college football and are now coaches in the NFL. Taylor coaches for the New England Patriots, and Connor coaches for the Kansas City Chiefs.
