About Jon Michael Hill's Life and Career
Jon Michael Hill enjoyed playing football and the saxophone when he was in high school. Later, he decided to focus on acting. He attended a summer drama program at Northwestern University. He then earned a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Illinois. While at the university, he acted in plays like King Lear and Ain't Misbehavin'.
Early Acting Roles
In 2007, Jon Michael Hill played the character of Puck in a play called A Midsummer Night's Dream. This play was part of the Shakespeare in the Park series. In 2009, he was nominated for an award for his role in The Tempest at the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in Chicago, Illinois.
The next year, in 2010, he was nominated for a Tony Award. This award was for his role in the play Superior Donuts, where he acted alongside Michael McKean. In the same year, he started his role as Detective Damon Washington in the TV show Detroit 1-8-7. This was a police drama on the ABC channel.
Television and Directing Work
Jon Michael Hill has also appeared in other TV shows. These include Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Person of Interest, and Eastbound & Down.
He then became a main star in the CBS series Elementary. In this show, he played Detective Marcus Bell. In 2018, he also directed an episode of Elementary called "The Worms Crawl In, the Worms Crawl Out". This was his first time directing a TV episode.
In 2025, Jon Michael Hill received another Tony Award nomination. This was for Best Actor in a Play for his role in Purpose. The play itself also won the Tony Award for Best Play.
