Jonatan Christie (born September 15, 1997) is a famous badminton player from Indonesia. He plays in the men's singles category. Jonatan is known for his powerful shots and quick moves on the court. He has won many important tournaments, including the All England Open in 2024. He also won gold medals at the SEA Games in 2017 and the Asian Games in 2018. Jonatan was a key player when Indonesia won the Thomas Cup in 2020.

Jonatan's Badminton Journey
Jonatan Christie joined Indonesia's national badminton team in 2012. He was called up after doing very well in the National Championships. He was only 15 years old when he won his first big international title. This was at the 2013 Indonesia International Challenge. He beat a much older and more experienced player in the final.
In 2014, Jonatan was ranked number one in the world for junior boys' singles. Even though he was still a junior, he reached the finals of another senior event. He won the Swiss International tournament that same year.
By 2017, Jonatan was reaching more finals. He played in the Thailand Open and the Korea Open. In August 2017, he won two gold medals at the SEA Games. He won for men's singles and as part of the men's team.
Big Wins and Top Rankings (2018-2019)
In 2018, Jonatan and the Indonesian men's team won the Asia Team Championships. They beat China in the final. He also reached the finals of the New Zealand Open.
A big moment for Jonatan was at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta. He won the gold medal in men's singles. He also helped his team win a silver medal.
In 2019, Jonatan started the year ranked 11th in the world. He played against some of the best players. He beat the world number one, Kento Momota, at the Malaysia Open. He also beat Viktor Axelsen. These wins helped him climb the world rankings.
Later in 2019, Jonatan won two more titles in Oceania. He won the New Zealand Open and the Australian Open. He also reached the finals of the Japan Open and the French Open. By August 2019, he reached his highest ranking yet, number four in the world.
Olympic Debut and Team Success (2021)
Jonatan played in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. He won his group matches but lost in the Round of 16.
In 2021, he helped the Indonesian team win the Thomas Cup. This was a huge victory for Indonesia. He played a very long and exciting match in the semifinals against Denmark. He also won his match in the finals against China. After the Thomas Cup, he played well at the Denmark Open.
Winning Titles Again (2022)
Jonatan started 2022 by winning the Swiss Open. This was his first big title since 2019. He also reached the finals of the Korea Open and the Badminton Asia Championships. He played well at the World Championships but lost in the quarterfinals.
He also qualified for the 2022 BWF World Tour Finals. He reached the semifinals of this important tournament.
First Super 500 and Super 750 Titles (2023)
Jonatan started 2023 ranked number three in the world. He won the Indonesia Masters, which was his first Super 500 title. This win was special because he played against his teammate in the final. On January 31, 2024, he reached his highest world ranking of number two.
Later in 2023, Jonatan reached the final of the Japan Open. He also won the Hong Kong Open. This was a big achievement, as he was the first Indonesian to win that men's singles title in 25 years. He then won his first Super 750 title at the French Open.
Winning a Super 1000 Title (2024)
In 2024, Jonatan had a fantastic start. He won the All England Open, which is a Super 1000 event. This was his first Super 1000 title. It was also a special win because he played against his teammate, Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, in the final. This was the first all-Indonesian men's singles final at the All England Open since 1994. He became Indonesia's first All England men's singles champion in 30 years.
After that, he won the Asian Championships. He beat a Chinese player in the final. Jonatan also played a big role in the Thomas Cup again. He won all his matches and helped Indonesia reach the final. He also played in the Olympic Games in 2024. He finished the year by reaching the semifinals of the 2024 BWF World Tour Finals.
New Chapter as an Independent Player (2025)
In 2025, Jonatan started a new phase in his career. He became an independent player, meaning he no longer trains with the national team. He made this choice to have more flexible training as he became a parent. He was also appointed captain of the Indonesian team for the 2025 Sudirman Cup. Jonatan Christie is a Roman Catholic. He married Shania Junianatha in December 2023. Shania was a member of the idol group JKT48. In August 2024, they welcomed their first son, Jayden.
Jonatan is also very active in helping others. He donated money he won from the 2018 Asian Games to build a mosque and a school in Lombok after an earthquake. He has also raised money for clean water, people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, and education for children. In 2023, he started a scholarship program called Beasiswa Jalincita to help students with their education.
