Jonathan James Bush (born May 6, 1931 – died May 5, 2021) was an American banker. He was a member of the famous Bush family. Jonathan was the fourth child of U.S. Senator Prescott Bush and Dorothy Bush.
He was the younger brother of George H. W. Bush, who became the 41st President of the United States. This also made Jonathan the uncle of George W. Bush, who became the 43rd President. He passed away in Florida just before his 90th birthday.
Growing Up
Jonathan Bush was born in Greenwich, Connecticut. His father, Prescott Bush, was a politician. Jonathan went to The Hotchkiss School and then to Yale University. At Yale, he was part of a secret society called Skull and Bones.
He was one of five children. His siblings included George H. W. Bush and Nancy Walker Bush Ellis. Like his brother George H. W. Bush, Jonathan was also a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity at Yale.
Jonathan Bush and his wife, Josephine, had two sons. One is Billy Bush, who is a well-known entertainment reporter. Their other son is Jonathan S. Bush, who works in healthcare.
His Career in Banking
Jonathan Bush had a long career in banking. He started his own company called J. Bush & Co. This company offered special banking services to foreign governments' embassies in Washington, D.C..
In 1997, a bank called Riggs Bank bought J. Bush & Co. After the purchase, Jonathan Bush became the CEO (Chief Executive Officer) and President of Riggs Investment. This firm was based in New Haven, Connecticut.
In the early 1980s, Jonathan also helped his nephew, George W. Bush, start his first oil business. This company was first called Arbusto Energy.
Supporting His Family
Jonathan Bush was a strong supporter of his family members. During the 2000 presidential campaign, he helped his nephew, George W. Bush, raise money. He was known as a "Bush Pioneer" because he raised more than $100,000 for the campaign.
Jonathan Bush died on May 5, 2021. He passed away the day before his 90th birthday. At the time of his death, he was the last surviving child of Prescott and Dorothy Walker Bush.
