Loan Spells and Learning Experiences
To gain more playing time, Jonathan was loaned to other clubs.
- In March 2003, he joined Chesterfield for six weeks. He played seven matches and scored one goal.
- After Chesterfield, he moved to Blackpool for three months. He played 16 league games and scored three goals. Even though he was a strong central midfielder, he sometimes played as a left midfielder. This unexpected role helped him show his skills in different positions.
Jonathan was called back to Blackburn Rovers. The team was struggling in the Premier League. Jonathan helped them improve their results and stay in the league. He even scored his first goal for Blackburn during this time. Blackburn Rovers then gave him a new three-year contract.
However, a new manager took over at Blackburn. Jonathan found himself playing less often. He was then loaned to Gillingham in the Championship league. He played regularly there and showed his strong work ethic.
Playing for Leeds United

In October 2007, Jonathan scored two goals in a match against Millwall. Later that season, he suffered another serious leg injury. This injury kept him out for a long time and affected Leeds' performance.
He returned to the team in March 2008. Leeds reached the playoff final again but lost. Jonathan continued to play for Leeds, sometimes even in a new position like right back. In May 2009, he left Leeds United after his contract ended.
Time at Swindon Town

Jonathan helped Swindon reach the League One playoffs in the 2009–10 season. They won their semi-final match but lost the final at Wembley to Millwall. For his excellent performance that season, Jonathan won both the club's Player of the Year award and the Players' Player of the Year award.
He scored one goal for Swindon Town, a great volley from far away. However, Swindon was relegated to League Two at the end of the 2010–11 season.
Success with Brentford

Jonathan joined Brentford in June 2011. He was named a deputy captain for the team.
In the 2011–12 season, Jonathan was named Brentford's Supporters' 'Player of the Year'. He played almost every minute of the League One season, scoring two goals and helping with four others.
