Jonathan Nolan's short story "Memento Mori" became the inspiration for the film Memento. His brother, Christopher Nolan, directed this movie. Even though the story was published after the film, they both received a nomination for an Academy Award for the screenplay.

In 2005, Jonathan and Christopher worked together again to write the movie The Prestige. This film was based on a novel by Christopher Priest. Jonathan also helped create the ideas for six animated short films in Batman: Gotham Knight. The brothers continued their teamwork by writing the screenplay for the 2008 film The Dark Knight. This movie became very successful, and its sequel, The Dark Knight Rises, later earned even more money.

On 10 February 2011, the TV network CBS decided to produce Nolan's new show, Person of Interest. The series officially started airing in the fall of 2011. It ran for five seasons and starred actors like Jim Caviezel, Taraji P. Henson, and Michael Emerson. Jonathan Nolan was one of the main producers for the show, along with J. J. Abrams.

Nolan also wrote the screenplay for the science-fiction film Interstellar. This movie was based on the ideas of theoretical physicist Kip Thorne. Christopher Nolan co-wrote, directed, and produced the film.

Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy wrote a pilot episode for a TV show based on Westworld, a 1973 science fiction Western thriller film. In 2013, HBO ordered the pilot episode. Nolan, Joy, and J. J. Abrams were executive producers, and Nolan directed the pilot. The show was then picked up as a full series, with Nolan and Joy as the main producers. Westworld premiered on 2 October 2016. It was very popular and was renewed for a second season, which started in April 2018, and then a third season.

In 2019, Nolan and Joy signed a big deal with Amazon Prime Video to create new shows. As part of this deal, they executive produced the series The Peripheral. They also executive produced the TV series Fallout, which is based on the popular video game series.

When Jonathan Nolan moved to Chicago, he found that having an English accent was not very popular. So, he learned to speak like a local Chicago kid.

Nolan has talked about the creative differences between himself and his brother, Christopher. He once said that Christopher is left-handed and he is right-handed. He believes this might be why Christopher can take his ideas and make them a bit more "twisted and interesting." He enjoys working with his brother in this way.

Jonathan Nolan is married to Lisa Joy. She is also a writer and helped create and produce Westworld. They have two children, a daughter and a son.
