Jonestown is a small community in Columbia County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it is an area identified by the United States Census Bureau for gathering population data. Jonestown is located in Northeastern Pennsylvania. In 2020, about 115 people lived there. It is also part of the larger Bloomsburg-Berwick micropolitan area.
History of Jonestown
Jonestown was started a long time ago by a person named Benjamin Jones. He founded the community in 1809. Benjamin Jones built a sawmill there, which was used to cut wood. Two years later, in 1811, he built a gristmill. A gristmill is a place where grain is ground into flour. This gristmill was used for a very long time, until 1968.
In the past, an important road passed through Jonestown. This road connected the towns of Wilkes-Barre and Muncy. The Susquehanna and Tioga Turnpike also went through Jonestown.
Geography of Jonestown
Jonestown is found in the northeastern part of Columbia County. Its exact location is 41°7′36″N 76°18′9″W / 41.12667°N 76.30250°W. The community sits at the bottom of the northern side of a mountain called Huntington Mountain. This mountain is also known as Knob Mountain.
Jonestown is located in the southeastern part of Fishing Creek Township. It is on both sides of a stream called Huntington Creek. This creek flows southwest along the base of Knob Mountain. It then joins Fishing Creek, which eventually flows into the large Susquehanna River.
The United States Census Bureau says that the total area of Jonestown is about 1.0 square kilometer (0.39 square miles). Most of this area, about 0.95 square kilometers (0.37 square miles), is land. The rest, about 0.06 square kilometers (0.02 square miles), is water. This means about 5.5% of Jonestown's area is water.
