The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (JSMA) is a cool art museum found on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon.
The first building was designed by Ellis F. Lawrence. He planned it as part of the university's main quadrangle, which is now called the Memorial Quadrangle. The museum's first director, Gertrude Bass Warner, helped design the building too. She was an expert in Asian art and made sure the building had special ways to control the temperature and humidity. The museum is officially recognized by the American Alliance of Museums.

Discover the Museum's History
The University of Oregon Museum of Art first opened its doors in 1933. Ellis F. Lawrence, who was the dean of Architecture at the university, designed it. The museum was built to hold the Murray Warner Collection of Oriental Art. This amazing collection had more than 3,700 artworks given to the university by Gertrude Bass Warner.
Gertrude Bass Warner believed that learning about art and different cultures was very important. She wanted the museum to help people understand each other better. She hoped the art would bring "fellowship, friendship and love" between people, especially with neighbors across the Pacific Ocean.
The museum got a big update and expansion between 2002 and 2005. At this time, it was renamed the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art. This was done to honor Jordan Schnitzer, who gave a lot of money to help with the expansion work.
Museum Locations
The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art also has other locations! You can find a smaller museum at Portland State University in Fariborz Maseeh Hall. There is also another branch at Washington State University.
What the Museum Does
The Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art helps the University of Oregon with its learning goals. It also helps everyone enjoy and appreciate visual arts. The museum wants visitors to feel like they are discovering something new. Its main idea is to make sure all visitors, no matter their age or how they learn, have a great experience.
The JSMA is the only university museum in Oregon that is recognized by the American Alliance of Museums. It hosts many different art shows and has collections of both old and new art. The museum also creates research and educational programs. These programs support the university's learning goals and reach out to communities outside the campus.
Explore the Exhibits
The JSMA has permanent galleries that show art from its collections. You can see Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and American art. There is also a large collection of modern Cuban art. This includes original old photographs from the personal collection of Cuban photographer Alberto Korda.
Special galleries show curated artwork. These pieces come from the museum's own collections and from other places around the world. They represent cultures from the past and present. A new exhibit is being planned that will feature art about the Black Lives Matter movement.
Special Inscriptions

The museum building has three important quotes written on its main, west-facing wall. Above the entrance, there is a quote from the Book of Proverbs. Near the south end of the building, you can find a passage from Plato. On the north side, there is a quote from Lao Tzu.
Also, the cornerstone of the building has a passage from Psalms.
