Jordan Sheffield's Baseball Journey
Starting in Amateur Baseball
Jordan Sheffield grew up in Tullahoma, Tennessee. He went to Tullahoma High School. Before he finished high school, doctors found he needed a special surgery. This surgery is called Tommy John surgery. It helps fix a pitcher's elbow. Because of this, he was picked later in the Major League Baseball draft. The draft is where professional teams choose young players.
The Boston Red Sox picked him in 2013. But Jordan decided not to sign with them. Instead, he chose to go to Vanderbilt University. He spent the 2014 season recovering from his surgery.
In 2015, Jordan started playing for Vanderbilt. He pitched in 6 games as a starter and 16 games as a relief pitcher. A relief pitcher comes into the game after the starting pitcher. He had a good record of 5 wins and 2 losses. His earned run average (ERA) was 2.85. ERA shows how many runs a pitcher allows per game. He also had 55 strikeouts. After this season, he played summer baseball for the Brewster Whitecaps.
In 2016, Jordan started 16 games for Vanderbilt. He finished with 8 wins and 6 losses. His ERA was 3.01, and he had 113 strikeouts.
Playing in the Minor Leagues
Joining the Los Angeles Dodgers
After his college career, Jordan was one of the top players available in the 2016 Major League Baseball draft. The Los Angeles Dodgers picked him in the first round. He signed with the Dodgers on June 25, 2016.
Jordan started his professional career in the minor leagues. Minor leagues are where players develop their skills before playing in the MLB. He played one game for the Arizona League Dodgers. Then he played seven games for the Class-A Great Lakes Loons. He had a 0-1 record with a 3.75 ERA in these games.
Moving Up Through the Teams
Jordan continued playing for the Great Lakes Loons in 2017. He started 20 games and had 3 wins and 7 losses. His ERA was 5.04. Later that season, he moved up to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. He played four games there.
In 2018, Jordan returned to the Quakes. He played in 14 games, starting seven of them. He had 1 win and 3 losses. After that season, he played in the Arizona Fall League. He was even chosen for the Fall Stars game, which features top young players.
Jordan started the 2019 season with the Quakes again. He was later promoted to the Tulsa Drillers. Between these two teams, he played in 49 games. He had 4 wins, 5 losses, and 13 saves. A save is when a relief pitcher finishes a close game. In 2020, Jordan did not play any games. This was because the minor league season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Reaching Major League Baseball
Joining the Colorado Rockies
On December 10, 2020, the Colorado Rockies picked Jordan in the Rule 5 Draft. This draft allows teams to pick players from other teams' minor league systems. Jordan then made the Rockies' team for Opening Day in 2021. Opening Day is the first day of the MLB season.
On April 2, 2021, Jordan Sheffield made his MLB debut. He pitched against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He pitched a scoreless ninth inning, meaning he didn't let the other team score any runs. On June 20, he had to go on the injured list. This was because of a muscle strain in his back. He finished the 2021 season with a 3.38 ERA in 30 games.
His Time in the MLB
In 2022, Jordan pitched in only two games for the Colorado Rockies. He pitched two innings and did not allow any runs. On August 12, 2022, the Rockies decided to "designate him for assignment." This means they removed him from their main roster.
A few days later, on August 16, he was sent to the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes. Triple-A is the highest level of minor league baseball. He was released from the team on October 27, 2022.
Family and Baseball
Jordan Sheffield's brother, Justus Sheffield, is also a major league pitcher. It's cool that two brothers made it to the big leagues! However, Jordan and Justus are not related to the famous former MLB player Gary Sheffield.
