Jorge Loring Martinez (born October 12, 1889, in Málaga, Spain – died September 22, 1936, in Madrid, Spain) was a clever Spanish engineer and businessman. He was a true pioneer in getting civil aviation (flying for regular people, not just the military) started in Spain. The Spanish Patent Office even called him one of their greatest inventors!
Jorge came from a wealthy family. His grandfather was Jorge Loring y Oyarzábal, a well-known businessman and politician. His family was involved in banking, mining, steel, and railways.

Becoming an Engineer and Pilot
In 1912, Jorge finished his studies in Madrid and became a civil engineer. This meant he was trained to design and build things like roads, bridges, and airports.
A few years later, in 1916, he started working for the government in public works. But Jorge had a bigger dream: flying! He soon took time off to follow his passion for aviation.
That same year, he earned his pilot's license from the National School of Aeronautics in Madrid. He even bought his own airplane, a Blériot model made in Spain.
In 1917, he became a coach at a company in Barcelona. He also owned a flight school for pilots and workshops where cars and planes were built.
Working with Other Inventors
In 1919, Jorge Loring teamed up with Raul Pateras Pescara Castelluccio. Raul was a brilliant inventor from Argentina who was very good with machines. Together, they formed a company called Helicopteracion Pateras Pescara.
In 1921, they even welcomed a group from France's Aerospace Technical Services.
Starting Air Services
Jorge Loring was a key figure in Spanish aviation. In 1920, he won the right to run an airmail service between Seville in Spain and Larache in Morocco.
After leaving his previous company, he created the Spanish Air Traffic Company (CETA) in 1921. This was Spain's very first airline for passengers! Jorge Loring managed this airline until it joined with other airlines to form a larger company called CLASSA. Later, CLASSA was replaced by LAPE in 1932.
In 1922, Jorge also opened a private school for pilots in Madrid. He was even put in charge of a blimp (a type of airship) that was meant to travel between Seville and Buenos Aires.
Building Airplanes
The next year, in 1923, Jorge Loring Martinez started his own company called Talleres Loring (Loring Workshops). This workshop was located in Cuatro Vientos, near Madrid.
His company began by building military aircraft, starting with Fokker C.IV planes. Talleres Loring also built some of Juan de la Cierva's autogyro prototypes. Autogyros were a type of aircraft that used a spinning rotor like a helicopter, but also had wings like a plane.
The company also built its own airplanes, such as the Loring R-1, the Loring R-2, and the Loring R-3.
Running such a big company and all these projects cost a lot of money. In 1931, Jorge Loring went back to working for the government. Three years later, with help from his brother, he founded a new company called Aeronáutica Industrial S.A. (AISA). This company also focused on making airplanes and aircraft for military use.
Life During the War
Jorge Loring had traditional political beliefs. When the Spanish Civil War began in 1936, he first tried to find safety with the British Embassy.
However, he continued to manage his business, going to his offices every day. Sadly, his life ended in November 1936 in Carabanchel, where his offices were located.
Aviation Inventions
Jorge Loring was also an inventor. He registered several patents related to aviation. These patents covered ideas for engines and propellers, showing his constant interest in improving flight technology.
