Jorge Palma is a famous Portuguese singer and songwriter. He was born on June 4, 1950. He is known for writing many popular songs.
Jorge Palma started his solo music career in 1972. Before that, he played music in the streets of different cities. He became very successful in the late 1980s. Some of his hit songs include "Deixa-me Rir" and "Frágil". He had more success in 2007 with the song "Encosta-te a Mim".
He has also been part of several music groups. These include Sindicato, Rio Grande, Cabeças no Ar, and his rock band Palma's Gang.

Early Life and Music Beginnings
Jorge Palma was born in Lisbon, Portugal. He started playing the piano and learning to read music when he was just 6 years old. When he was 8, he performed his first piano concert. This was at the Portuguese National Conservatory.
In 1963, when he was 13, Jorge came in second place in a music contest. This contest was held in Mallorca, Spain. He also continued his school studies at the same time. In 1964, his music taste changed. He started to focus more on pop-rock music instead of classical music.
Musical Career Journey
Early Bands and First Solo Songs (1967–1984)
In the summer of 1967, Jorge Palma joined a band called Black Boys. He played the keyboard for them. The next summer, in 1968, he joined another band called Jets. He also played with bands like Extravaganza and Beatnicks.
In 1969, Jorge joined the rock band Sindicato. At this time, he was also studying Electrical Engineering at the University of Lisbon. With Sindicato, he played at the first Vilar de Mouros Festival in 1971. Sindicato released one song and an album of cover songs. The band broke up in 1972. Jorge also left university that year.
Jorge Palma began his solo career in 1972. His first solo song was "The Nine Billion Names of God." The words were in English. After this, he worked with a famous poet, José Carlos Ary dos Santos. He wanted to get better at writing songs in Portuguese. In 1973, he released his first Portuguese song, "A Última Canção."
In 1973, Jorge moved to Denmark with his wife. He lived there for about a year. After the Carnation Revolution in Portugal in 1974, he returned home.
In 1975, Jorge Palma took part in a music festival. He sang two songs: "O Pecado Capital" and "Viagem." His first studio album, Com Uma Viagem na Palma da Mão, was released in 1975.
His second album, 'Té Já, came out in 1977. After this, he traveled to Spain and Brazil. He played music in the streets of many cities. He also spent time in Paris, France. There, he performed in bars, cafés, and even the Paris Métro. He played songs by artists like Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen.
Jorge returned to Portugal in 1979. He recorded and released his third album, Qualquer Coisa Pá Música. He then spent two more years in France.
He came back to Portugal in 1982. He released his fourth album, Acto Contínuo. In 1984, he recorded his fifth album, Asas e Penas. This was his first album since becoming a father.
Finding Success and Acclaim (1985–1991)
In 1985, Jorge Palma released a very popular album called O Lado Errado da Noite. This album included the hit song "Deixa-me Rir." Music critics loved the album. It won several awards from the Portuguese press. Because of its success, Jorge went on a big tour around Portugal. He played in Madeira and the Azores.
In 1986, Jorge finished a piano course at the Conservatório Nacional de Lisboa. He then started more advanced piano studies there. That same year, he released his seventh album, Quarto Minguante.
Three years later, in 1989, he released his eighth album, Bairro do Amor. This album was also highly praised. It features some of his most famous songs, like "Frágil" and the title song "Bairro do Amor."
Jorge finished his piano studies in 1990. After his final exam, he was asked to record an album with just his voice and piano. He liked the idea and recorded some of his best songs with a Steinway piano. The album was called Só and came out in 1991. It was very well-received. In 2014, a music magazine called it one of the best Portuguese albums ever.
New Projects and Collaborations (1992–2001)
After Só, Jorge Palma wanted to play rock music with guitars again. He formed a band called Palma's Gang. This band included members from other famous Portuguese bands. In 1993, Palma's Gang released a live album. It featured Jorge's songs but with a hard-rock sound. Jorge performed many shows across Portugal, both solo and with Palma's Gang.
In 1996, Jorge joined a new music project called Rio Grande. This band had other well-known Portuguese musicians. Their first album, released that year, was inspired by traditional Portuguese music. It became a huge success. In 1997, Rio Grande released a live album. It included a new song by Jorge Palma.
In 1998, Jorge Palma performed at the Expo '98 World Fair in Lisbon. He also worked as the music director for a play.
During the 1990s, Jorge also worked with many other Portuguese artists.
Later Years and Recent Music (2001–Present)
After 10 years, Jorge Palma released a new solo album in 2001. It was simply titled Jorge Palma. This album won an award for the best Portuguese album of 2001.
In 2002, he released his first solo live album, No Tempo dos Assassinos. His son, Vicente, played in some of the performances. That year, he also joined a music project called Cabeças no Ar. This group was like a reunion of the band Rio Grande. They released one album.
In 2004, Jorge Palma released a new studio album called Norte.
In 2007, the album Voo Nocturno came out. The song "Encosta-te a Mim" from this album became a big hit in Portugal. The next year, a live album from the tour for Voo Nocturno was released.
In 2011, Jorge released Com Todo o Respeito. This was his only studio album released during the 2010s.
In 2015 and 2016, Jorge Palma performed shows with another singer, Sérgio Godinho. A live album of their show was released in 2015.
Jorge Palma released his most recent studio album, Vida, in April 2023.
Personal Life
Jorge Palma has two sons, Vicente (born in 1983) and Francisco (born in 1996). In November 2008, Jorge married Rita Tomé in Las Vegas. She is his current wife.
