José Arechavaleta (1838–1912)

José Arechavaleta (born September 27, 1838, died June 16, 1912) was an important scientist. He was born in Urioste, a town near Bilbao, Spain. Later, he moved to Uruguay and became a well-known pharmacist, geologist, and naturalist. A naturalist is someone who studies nature, like plants and animals.

Early Life and Career

When José Arechavaleta was 18 years old, he moved to Uruguay. There, he met another scientist named José Ernesto Gibert, who studied plants (a botanist).

In 1862, José Arechavaleta earned a degree in pharmacy. After that, he started teaching at the University of the Republic in Montevideo. He taught subjects like botany (the study of plants), zoology (the study of animals), and natural history.

In 1892, he became the general director of the natural history museum in Montevideo. He held this important job until he passed away in 1912.

Scientific Discoveries

In Uruguay, José Arechavaleta spent a lot of time studying and collecting insects. He traveled all over the country to find them. He was especially interested in Coleoptera, which are beetles.

As a botanist, he wrote a very important book about the grasses that grow naturally in Uruguay. He also helped set up special laboratories for bacteriology at the University Institute of Experimental Hygiene. Bacteriology is the study of tiny living things called bacteria.

In 1899, another scientist named Carlos Luigi Spegazzini honored José Arechavaleta. He named a group of plants, called a genus, Arechavaletaia after him.

Main Books

José Arechavaleta wrote several important books about his scientific work:

  • Las gramíneas uruguayas, published in 1894. This book was all about the different types of grasses found in Uruguay.
  • Flora uruguaya, published in 1901. This book listed and briefly described all the plants known at that time in Uruguay. It also included some new plants he discovered.

Honors and Recognition

Some plant species were named in honor of José Arechavaleta because of his great contributions to science:

  • (Arecaceae) Cocos arechavaletana Barb.Rodr.
  • (Malvaceae) Pavonia arechavaletana Krapov. & Fryxell
