José Baptista Pinheiro de Azevedo (born June 5, 1917 – died August 10, 1983) was an important Portuguese political figure. He was a reformer and played a key role in a revolution. He helped remove Marcelo Caetano from power in 1974. Pinheiro de Azevedo served as the 104th Prime Minister of Portugal from September 19, 1975, to June 23, 1976. He also ran for president in 1976, but he did not win.

José Pinheiro de Azevedo was born on June 5, 1917, in Luanda. At that time, Luanda was part of Portuguese Angola. Later, he moved to Portugal.

Joining the Fight for Democracy

In the 1960s, Pinheiro de Azevedo joined a group called the Movement for Democratic Unity. This group worked to bring democracy to Portugal. He also supported several people who ran for president. These included José Norton de Matos, Manuel Quintão Meireles, and Humberto Delgado.

Military Career and the Carnation Revolution

Serving in the Portuguese Navy

Pinheiro de Azevedo was a brave naval officer. He served as an admiral in the Portuguese Colonial War. During this war, he was in charge of protecting the seas around Angola.

Role in the 1974 Revolution

After the Carnation Revolution on April 25, 1974, big changes happened in Portugal. This revolution peacefully ended a long dictatorship. Pinheiro de Azevedo was chosen to be part of the National Salvation Junta. This was a group that helped lead the country after the revolution. He was very dedicated to making Portugal a democratic country.

Becoming Prime Minister

Leading the Provisional Government

On August 29, 1975, Pinheiro de Azevedo became the Prime Minister of Portugal. He led the Sixth Provisional Government. He took over from the previous Prime Minister, Vasco Gonçalves.

End of His Time as Prime Minister

Pinheiro de Azevedo's time as Prime Minister ended on June 23, 1976. He had a heart attack while campaigning in Oporto. He was running to become the President of Portugal. While he was recovering in the hospital, Vasco Almeida e Costa temporarily took over for the last 30 days. Later, António Ramalho Eanes became president and appointed Mário Soares as the new Prime Minister.

In 1976, José Pinheiro de Azevedo ran for president as an independent candidate. The election took place on June 27, 1976.

  • António Ramalho Eanes won the election with about 61.6% of the votes.
  • Otelo Saraiva de Carvalho received about 16.5% of the votes.
  • José Pinheiro de Azevedo came in third place. He received about 14.4% of the votes.
  • Octávio Rodrigues Pato received about 7.6% of the votes.

In total, over 4.8 million people voted in this important election.
