Early Baseball Career
José Offerman went to Colegio Biblico Cristiano High School. After that, he signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1986. This was his first step into professional baseball.
In 1988, he finished his first season. He was named the Best Prospect in the Pioneer League. Offerman quickly moved up through the minor leagues. He made his major league debut on August 19, 1990. This was against the Montreal Expos. He was the 55th player in MLB history to hit a home run in his very first time at bat.
Playing in Major League Baseball
By 1992, Offerman became the main shortstop for the Dodgers. On opening day in 1993, he was the first batter to face the Florida Marlins. He made his first appearance in the All-Star Game in 1995. After that season, he was traded to the Kansas City Royals. This happened partly because his defense was not always strong.
After a year as a utility player, he became the starting second baseman in 1997. Offerman had some of his best hitting seasons with Kansas City. In 1998, he hit for a .315 batting average. He also led the league with 13 triples. He had the fifth most stolen bases, with 45. After that season, he joined the Boston Red Sox. He made the All-Star Game for a second time in 1999.
Offerman was a better hitter than a fielder. In 1992, 1993, and 1995, he made many errors. His hitting started to decline in 2000. He was sent to the Seattle Mariners during the 2002 season. But he was released after that. In 2003, he joined the Montreal Expos for spring training. However, he was cut before the regular season. He spent that year with the Bridgeport Bluefish in an independent league.
In 2004, he earned a spot on the Minnesota Twins team. He led the league in pinch-hits that year. He started 2005 with the Philadelphia Phillies. But he was released after a slow start. Later, he signed with the New York Mets. He was called back up to the major leagues in June.
Playing After MLB
Offerman played in the 2008 Caribbean Series for the Tigres del Licey. He helped his team win their tenth Caribbean Series title. During this series, he signed a contract with the Veracruz Red Eagles in the Mexican League.
In December 2008, Offerman became the player-manager for Tigres del Licey. This team is in the Dominican Professional Baseball League (LIDOM). With Offerman as manager, Licey won the LIDOM championship. They swept the Gigantes del Cibao in five straight games. As champions, Licey was invited to the 2009 Caribbean Series. Offerman was their manager.
On January 7, 2014, Offerman was again named manager of the Tigres del Licey. He replaced Mike Guerrero. Under Offerman's leadership, Licey won the LIDOM Championship again. They won five games to three against the Leones del Escogido. As champions, Licey was invited to the 2014 Caribbean Series. Offerman was the manager for that series too.
Suspensions and Consequences
José Offerman faced suspensions during his career. In 2007, while playing for the Long Island Ducks, he was involved in an incident during a game. This led to him being suspended indefinitely from the league. He later faced legal proceedings regarding the incident. A court determined his actions were unusual for him. He was given a special probation.
Later, in 2009, a civil lawsuit was filed against Offerman. The person involved claimed injuries from the 2007 incident. In 2014, a court ordered Offerman to pay a settlement.
In 2010, Offerman was involved in another incident while managing a LIDOM game. This led to a lifetime ban from the LIDOM league. However, this suspension was later lifted in February 2013.
