José Padilla's Musical Journey
José Padilla was born in Barcelona, Spain. He moved to Ibiza in 1975. In 1991, he became the main DJ at the famous Café del Mar.
Creating Chill-out Music
In 1994, José Padilla put together the first Cafe del Mar compilation album. A compilation album is a collection of songs by different artists. This album was for the React music label.
The Cafe del Mar album series became very popular. It now has more than 25 volumes! This success also led to the bar creating its own music label. José Padilla chose the songs for the first six albums. He also selected tracks for the special 20th-anniversary album.
His Own Albums
Even though José Padilla's songs appeared on his compilation albums, his first solo album came out in 1998. It was called Souvenir and was released by Mercury Records. This album featured collaborations with other chill-out musicians, like Lenny Ibizarre.
His second album, Navigator, was released in 2001. This album was very successful! It even received a nomination for a Latin Grammy for Best Instrumental Album.
Touring and Later Work
José Padilla later stopped being the main DJ at Café del Mar. Instead, he traveled around the world, performing his music.
In 2007, he released a new compilation series called Bella Musica. This series was separate from his work with Café del Mar. In 2011, he released another CD compilation called "Here Comes the Sunset" (Volume 4).
In 2015, José Padilla released his new album, So Many Colours. He made it available for people to listen to online before its official release. That same year, he returned to BBC Radio 1's Essential Mix show. It was his first time back on the show in 20 years! He played a special two-hour set of his favorite music.
José Padilla passed away in Ibiza, Spain, on October 18, 2020, when he was 64 years old.
