Joseph Sáenz de Aguirre (born March 24, 1630 – died August 19, 1699) was an important Spanish leader in the Catholic Church. He was a Cardinal and a very smart member of the Benedictine order. The Benedictines are a group of monks.

Life of Joseph Sáenz de Aguirre
Joseph Sáenz de Aguirre was born in Logroño, a city in Spain. He joined the Benedictine order, a group of monks. He studied at the famous Monte Cassino monastery.
His Time as a Teacher
For fifteen years, he led studies at the Monastery of St. Vincent in Salamanca. He later became the head, or abbot, of this monastery. He also taught important subjects like theology and Holy Scripture at the University of Salamanca.
Becoming a Cardinal
Joseph Sáenz de Aguirre became an advisor and secretary for the Holy Office. This was an important part of the Church. He wrote a strong argument against a French church declaration in 1682. This work impressed Innocent XI, who was the Pope at the time. The Pope made him a Cardinal in 1686.
His Later Years and Death
He worked very hard, which made him sick. For many years, he suffered from epileptic seizures. He died suddenly in Rome on August 19, 1699. He was buried in a Spanish church there. He had asked for his heart to be placed in Monte Cassino monastery.
