Jose Etxenagusia Errazkin (born February 1, 1844 – died January 31, 1912) was a talented Spanish painter from the Basque Country. He was known for his "genre" paintings, which are artworks showing scenes from everyday life. He often signed his paintings with the shorter name "Echena."

The Life of Jose Etxenagusia

Jose was born in Hondarribia, a town in Spain, into a wealthy family. From a young age, Jose showed a great talent for art. When he was just 14, he started studying at the Royal Seminary in Bergara. This was quite special because he came from a small town.

Four years later, he got a job with the city government in Burgos. But he wasn't happy there. He soon moved to Bilbao to focus more on his art. In Bilbao, he worked for the Tudela to Bilbao Railway to earn money for his art lessons.

However, his plans were interrupted in 1872 when the Third Carlist War began. After helping to defend Bilbao for a short time, he moved to Bayonne in France to continue his studies. In 1875, his aunt passed away from injuries she got during the war. She left him a lot of money, which allowed him to travel to Italy.

After visiting Venice, Jose went to Rome. There, he attended several art schools and spent time with other Spanish artists. One of his friends, José Villegas Cordero, found Jose's Basque name hard to say. He started calling him "Echena... and I don't know what." The shorter name stuck, and Jose began using "Echena" as his signature.

Jose was greatly inspired by the works of Giambattista Tiepolo, a famous Italian painter. He started painting historical scenes with soldiers and people from royal courts. Later, he was also influenced by the Nazarene movement, a group of artists who wanted to bring back religious art.

Jose returned to Spain in 1882 and quickly found work. He designed symbols and costumes for the Holy Week procession. He also created a large painting of Christ at Calvary for the Church of Santa Maria. One of his most important works was a painting of Christ at Golgotha, which is now lost. This painting won a medal at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in 1884. It was later copied and shared widely by the company Goupil & cie.

Later, Jose painted murals for the Biscay Foral Delegation Palace and the Chavarri Palace. He also had a successful art tour in England.

By the early 1890s, Jose was back in Rome. He opened his own art gallery and became a teacher at the Academia Chigi. He lived in Rome for the rest of his life, sometimes visiting Florence and Venice. He passed away in Rome from a fever caused by malaria. After his death, a big show of his paintings was held in Donostia.
