Early Life and Education
Josef Duchač studied to become a chemical engineer. This means he learned how to design and operate chemical plants. His education helped him later in his career.
Political Career
Joining the Christian Democratic Union
In 1957, Josef Duchač joined the Christian Democratic Union in East Germany. This party was different from the one in West Germany at the time.
Role in German Reunification
When East and West Germany reunited, the East German CDU merged with the West German CDU. This was a big moment in German history. Josef Duchač played an important part in this period.
Becoming Minister-President of Thuringia
On October 14, 1990, Josef Duchač was chosen as Thuringia's first Minister-President. This happened right after Germany became one country again. He was responsible for leading the state government.
Resignation from Office
Josef Duchač served as Minister-President until early 1992. On January 23, 1992, he announced he would step down. This decision came after questions were raised about his past connections. He was succeeded by Bernhard Vogel on February 5, 1992.
