Early Political Life
In 1957, Josef Duchač joined the Christian Democratic Union in East Germany. This was a political party in the former East Germany.
Role in German Reunification
After East and West Germany reunited, the East German CDU joined with the West German CDU. This happened in 1990. Josef Duchač played an important role in the new Germany.
Becoming Thuringia's Leader
On October 14, 1990, Josef Duchač was chosen. He became the first Minister-President of Thuringia after reunification. A Minister-President is like the head of the state government.
Stepping Down from Office
Josef Duchač announced his resignation on January 23, 1992. This was because questions were raised about his past connections. He was then replaced by Bernhard Vogel on February 5, 1992.
