Joseph Carter was born on September 11, 1842. His hometown was Baltimore, Maryland. When he was older, he joined the army. He became part of the 3rd Maryland Volunteer Infantry. This group was a Union Army regiment.

Carter served as a captain. He led Company D in his regiment. His bravery during the Civil War was very important.

Heroic Actions in Battle

Captain Carter showed great courage on March 25, 1865. This was during the Battle of Fort Stedman in Virginia. During the battle, he did something amazing. He successfully captured the battle flag of the enemy. This was the flag of the 51st Virginia Infantry. He also took several enemy soldiers as prisoners.

For these brave actions, he was awarded the Medal of Honor. This special award recognizes soldiers who show extreme bravery. Later, he was promoted to major in his regiment.

Life After the War

After the Civil War ended, Joseph Carter settled down. He moved to a farm in Elkridge, Maryland. His father had bought this farm in 1862. Carter was active in local politics for many years. He was part of the Republican Party in Maryland.

Around 1898, he moved to Washington, D.C. Joseph Carter passed away there on April 10, 1922. He was buried at the Arlington National Cemetery. His wife, Mary J. Carter, is buried there with him.
