Joseph Fogerty was born in Limerick, Ireland, on April 7, 1831. His father, John Fogerty, was also an engineer. Joseph learned a lot about engineering from his father when he was young. In 1856, he went to University College, London to continue his studies.

A Career in Building and Design

After his studies, Joseph Fogerty worked in London. He worked for a very famous engineer named Sir John Fowler. Joseph became a skilled civil engineer and architect. A civil engineer designs and builds things like roads, bridges, and buildings. An architect designs buildings.

On February 9, 1880, Joseph became a Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects. This is a special membership for architects who have shown great skill and knowledge.

Becoming a Novelist

Besides his work in engineering and architecture, Joseph Fogerty was also a writer. He published three novels during his lifetime. These books were titled Lauterdale, Caterina, and Countess Irene.

Family Life

Joseph Fogerty had a family that also included talented people. His brother, William Fogerty, was an architect. His nephew, John Frederick Fogerty, was also an architect.

Joseph married Hannah Cochrane, who was from Limerick. They had a daughter named Elsie Fogerty. Elsie was born in Sydenham, London, on December 16, 1865. She grew up to become a very well-known teacher of speech and drama.

Joseph Fogerty passed away on September 2, 1899. He died at his home, called Enderby, in Sydenham.
