Early Life and Education

Joseph Palmer was born in Great Torrington, England, on June 13, 1749. When he was 16 years old, he began studying at Exeter College, Oxford in 1766. He worked hard and earned his first degree, a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), in 1770. Two years later, in 1772, he completed his Master of Arts (M.A.) degree.

Becoming a Church Leader

After finishing his studies, Joseph Palmer decided to become a priest. He was first ordained as a deacon on September 25, 1774. This was done by Bishop Frederick Keppel. He started working as a curate (an assistant priest) in a place called Langtree. His yearly pay was £40.

On May 5, 1776, he was ordained as a full priest. Bishop Jonathan Shipley performed this ceremony at St James Parish Church. This was an important step in his career in the church.

Important Roles and Career

Joseph Palmer took on several key roles in the church. From 1779 to 1802, he served as the Chancellor of Ferns Cathedral. This was a significant leadership position.

In 1787, he became the Dean of Cashel. A Dean is a senior priest who leads a cathedral and its clergy. He held this important role for many years. In 1802, he also became the Precentor of Christ Church Cathedral, Waterford. A Precentor is in charge of the music and services in a cathedral.

Joseph Palmer continued to serve in both the Dean of Cashel and Precentor of Waterford roles until he passed away on May 2, 1829.
