Josephine Nambooze (born in 1930) is a famous Ugandan doctor. She is a specialist in public health, which means she helps communities stay healthy. She is also a respected teacher and researcher. Dr. Nambooze made history as the first woman in East Africa to become a qualified doctor, around 1959. She is now a professor emeritus of public health at Makerere University School of Public Health.
Early Life and Schooling
Josephine Nambooze was born in 1930 in Nsambya, a part of Kampala, Uganda. Her father, Joseph Lule, was a school teacher. Her mother, Maria Magdalena Lule, was a housewife. Josephine was the oldest of their thirteen children.
She went to St. Joseph's Primary School in Nsambya. Later, she attended Mount Saint Mary's College Namagunga. At Namagunga, she focused on science subjects. Since her school did not have science labs, she took her science classes at Namilyango College. This was an all-boys boarding school about 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) away.
Becoming a Doctor
In the mid-1950s, Josephine Nambooze was accepted into the Makerere University School of Medicine. She was the very first woman to study human medicine at this school. After graduating from Makerere, she continued her studies. She went to universities in the United Kingdom and the United States. She returned to Uganda in 1962.
Her Career in Public Health
In 1962, Dr. Nambooze joined the staff at Makerere University. She became a lecturer, teaching about public health and the health of mothers and children. She was also put in charge of the Kasangati Health Centre. This center was a teaching facility for the Makerere University School of Public Health.
Over time, she became a senior lecturer, then an associate professor, and finally a full professor in these fields. Dr. Nambooze also worked for the World Health Organization (WHO). She was the WHO representative in Botswana. She also directed support for health services development at the WHO regional office in Brazzaville, Congo.
