Josh Hoffman (born 10 March 1988) is a talented rugby league player. He has played for the New Zealand international team. He plays as a fullback, winger, centre, or five-eighth. Currently, he plays for the Wests Panthers in the Brisbane Rugby League competition.
He previously played for big teams like the Brisbane Broncos, Gold Coast Titans, and Parramatta Eels in the National Rugby League (NRL). He also represented the Indigenous All Stars.
About Josh Hoffman
Josh Hoffman was born in Mackay, Queensland, Australia. His father, Shane, is from Māori heritage in New Zealand. His mother, Grace, is from the Torres Strait Islands. Josh went to Mackay State High School. When he was a kid, he played junior rugby league in Mackay. He even played alongside his cousin, Ben Barba. Josh also played rugby union as an Inside Centre.
He has many famous rugby league players in his family. These include Wendell Sailor, Ben Barba, Dane Gagai, and Travis Waddell. Josh is part of the Ngāti Pikiāo people. He is married to Emma Kerr, and they have two daughters, Leilani-Grace (born in 2013) and Evie (born in 2015).
Josh Hoffman's Rugby League Journey
Early Career with Brisbane Broncos (2008-2014)
Josh Hoffman made his first appearance in the NRL in 2008. He played for the Brisbane Broncos in round 13. He filled in for another player who was away for a special game. Josh played two matches in his first year. He spent most of that year playing in the under-20s competition.
In 2009, Josh returned to the Broncos team. He scored his first NRL try in a win against the New Zealand Warriors. He also played for the Queensland Residents team. He was named the best player in their win over the New South Wales Residents.
After a key player left in 2009, Josh became the main fullback for the Broncos in 2010. He was awarded the Paul Morgan Medal. This award goes to the Broncos' best and fairest player of the season. He played 20 matches and scored 7 tries that year. Even though he grew up in Queensland, Josh chose to play for New Zealand instead of Australia or Queensland. He said he always wanted to play for New Zealand.
In 2011, Josh played 16 matches and scored 6 tries. He had a leg injury that kept him out for some time. He returned later in the season but got injured again. This injury meant he could not play for New Zealand. In October 2011, he signed a new contract with the Broncos until 2015.
International Debut and Position Changes (2012-2014)
Josh made his international debut for New Zealand in April 2012. He played fullback against Australia. He played well, making strong runs and saving a try. Later that year, he was briefly dropped from the Broncos team for being late to training. He returned to play on the wing. He played 23 matches and scored 3 tries in 2012. After the season, he played fullback for New Zealand again.
In 2013, Josh moved to the wing position for the Broncos. He started very well, scoring 7 tries in his first 6 matches. This included three tries in one game. He played fullback for New Zealand in the 2013 Anzac Test and scored a try. He was the Broncos' top try-scorer in 2013 with 15 tries. He was also chosen for the New Zealand Kiwis team for the 2013 Rugby League World Cup. He played in some World Cup games, scoring a try against Samoa. An injury kept him out of the later stages of the World Cup.
In 2014, Josh played five-eighth for the Broncos. He had not played this position since he was a junior. He suffered a leg injury that kept him out of some games. He later moved back to fullback. He played 20 matches and scored one try for the Broncos that year. In October 2014, Josh signed a three-year deal with the Gold Coast Titans.
Time with Gold Coast Titans (2015-2016)
In 2015, Josh joined the Gold Coast Titans. He played for the Indigenous All Stars team in February 2015. His team won the match. He made his club debut for the Titans in round 1. He scored his first two tries for the Titans in round 7. He played in all 24 of the Titans' matches that year and scored 6 tries.
In 2016, Josh played in all 25 of the Titans' matches and scored 8 tries. The Titans told him that they would not offer him a new contract after the season. In September 2016, he signed a three-year deal with the Parramatta Eels.
Playing for Parramatta Eels (2017-2019)
Josh joined the Parramatta Eels in 2017. He made his club debut in round 1, playing on the wing. He scored his first try for the Eels in round 6. He had a knee injury that made him miss most of the season. He played for the Wentworthville Magpies, the Eels' feeder team, for the rest of the year.
In 2018, Josh started as a winger for Parramatta. He was later moved to a reserve team. He returned to the main team in June. He scored a try in a game against Newcastle. A shoulder injury ended his season early in August.
In 2019, Josh was not a regular starter for Parramatta. He filled in when other players were injured or suspended. He played in a big win against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. He also played in the first game at the new Western Sydney Stadium, where Parramatta won by a large margin. In May, he scored an exciting try by intercepting the ball and running the length of the field. In June, he scored the winning try for Parramatta against South Sydney. He scored two tries in a big win against his old team, the Brisbane Broncos. He had to leave that game due to a head injury.
Josh played many games for the Wentworthville Magpies in 2019. He was the captain of the team that reached the Canterbury Cup NSW grand final. They finished 8th in the league but won three upset victories to reach the final.
Later Career (2020-Present)
After leaving Parramatta, Josh joined the Townsville Blackhawks in the Queensland Cup. He played 13 games for them between 2020 and 2021. In 2022, Josh joined the Wests Panthers in the local Brisbane A-grade competition, where he continues to play.
