When he was a kid, he played junior rugby league in Mackay. He even played alongside his cousin, Ben Barba. Josh also played rugby union as an Inside Centre.

Josh's Rugby League Journey

Starting in the NRL (2008-2009)

Josh Hoffman made his first appearance in the NRL in 2008. He played for the Brisbane Broncos in a game against the St. George Illawarra Dragons. He played two matches that year, spending most of his time in the Under 20s competition.

In 2009, Josh returned to the Broncos after shoulder surgery. He scored his first NRL try in a win against the New Zealand Warriors. He also played for the Redcliffe Dolphins in the Queensland Cup and was named the best player for the Queensland Residents team.

Becoming a Star Fullback (2010-2011)

After a key player left the Broncos, Josh took over as the main fullback in 2010. He played very well and was given the Paul Morgan Medal. This award goes to the Broncos' best and fairest player of the season. Josh played 20 matches and scored 7 tries that year. Even though he grew up in Queensland, he chose to play for New Zealand instead of Australia. He said he always dreamed of playing for New Zealand.

In 2011, Josh played 16 matches and scored 6 tries. He had a leg injury that kept him out for a while. After returning, he played every game until the end of the season. However, he got injured again in the last game, which ended his season early. This injury also stopped him from playing for New Zealand in international games. Later that year, he signed a new contract with the Broncos until 2015.

Playing for New Zealand (2012-2013)

In 2012, Josh made his international debut for the New Zealand national rugby league team. He played fullback in a game against Australia. Even though New Zealand lost, Josh played very well. He made strong runs and saved a try. Later that season, he was briefly dropped from the Broncos team for being late to training. He returned to play on the wing.

In 2013, Josh moved to the wing for the Broncos. He had a great start, scoring 7 tries in his first 6 matches, including three tries in one game! He continued to play for New Zealand at fullback in international matches, scoring a try against Australia. Josh became the Broncos' top try-scorer for the 2013 season with 15 tries. He was also chosen for the New Zealand team for the 2013 Rugby League World Cup. He played well in the World Cup but missed some games due to a shoulder injury.

Moving to New Teams (2014-2016)

In 2014, Josh played for the Broncos at five-eighth, a position he hadn't played much since his junior days. He also played in the 2014 Auckland Nines tournament, where his team finished second. He suffered another leg injury that year, which kept him out of some important games. Towards the end of the season, he moved back to fullback. After the 2014 season, Josh signed a three-year deal with the Gold Coast Titans.

In 2015, Josh joined the Gold Coast Titans. He played on the wing for the Indigenous All Stars team, which won their match. He made his club debut for the Titans in the first round of the season. He scored his first tries for the Titans in round 7. Josh played in all 24 of the Titans' matches that year and scored 6 tries.

In 2016, the Titans told Josh they would not offer him a new contract. He played in all 25 of the Titans' matches that season, scoring 8 tries. In September 2016, he left the Titans and signed a three-year deal with the Parramatta Eels.

Time with the Parramatta Eels (2017-2019)

Josh joined the Parramatta Eels in 2017. He played on the wing in his first game for the Eels. He scored his first try for the club in round 6. Later that season, he injured his knee and missed most of the year. He played for the Wentworthville Magpies, which is the Eels' feeder team, for the rest of 2017.

In 2018, Josh started as a winger for Parramatta but was later moved to the reserve grade team. He returned to the main team in June and scored a try in a game against Newcastle. Unfortunately, he suffered a shoulder injury in August, which ended his season.

At the start of the 2019 season, Josh was not in the main Parramatta team. However, he was called up a few times to fill in for injured or suspended players. He scored an exciting intercept try in a game against North Queensland. In Round 12, he scored the winning try for Parramatta against South Sydney. In Round 14, he scored two tries against his old team, the Brisbane Broncos. He had to leave that game after an accidental hit to the head. For most of 2019, Josh played for the Wentworthville Magpies. He was the captain when they reached the Canterbury Cup NSW grand final, even though they finished 8th in the regular season.

Recent Career (2020-Present)

After leaving Parramatta, Josh joined the Townsville Blackhawks in the Queensland Cup. He played 13 games for them between 2020 and 2021. In 2022, Josh joined the Wests Panthers in the local A-grade Brisbane competition, where he plays today.
