Joshua Harold Stein (born September 13, 1966) is an American politician and lawyer. He is the 76th governor of North Carolina, a role he has held since January 2025. He is a member of the Democratic Party.
Before becoming governor, Stein was the 51st Attorney General of North Carolina from 2017 to 2025. He also served in the North Carolina Senate from 2009 to 2016. Stein was born in Washington, D.C., but moved to North Carolina when he was young. He is North Carolina's first Jewish governor.

Early Life and Education
Growing Up in North Carolina
Josh Stein was born on September 13, 1966, in Washington, D.C. His parents were Jane and Adam Stein. His family moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, and then settled in Chapel Hill. His father helped start North Carolina's first law firm that welcomed people of all races.
Josh went to Chapel Hill High School. He was part of the state championship soccer team there.
College and Beyond
After high school, Stein went to Dartmouth College. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 1988. After college, he taught English and economics in Zimbabwe. Later, he earned degrees from Harvard Law School and the Kennedy School of Government.
Early Career in Public Service
Working in Government and Law
In the 1990s, Josh Stein worked as an intern for State Representative Dan Blue. After finishing law school, he worked for organizations like the Self-Help Credit Union. These groups help people and communities.
He also managed John Edwards's campaign for the U.S. Senate in 1998. Then, he worked as Edwards's deputy chief of staff from 1999 to 2000.
In 2001, North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper chose Stein to be the Senior Deputy Attorney General for Consumer Protection. In this job, he helped protect people from unfair business practices. He held this position until 2008.
Serving in the State Senate
In 2008, Stein was elected to represent the 16th district in the North Carolina Senate. He won against Republican John Alexander. He was reelected in 2010. His fellow senators then chose him to be the minority whip.
In the Senate, Stein worked on important issues. He helped expand the state's DNA database. He also worked to ban cyberstalking and improve school safety. He supported extending tax credits for renewable energy.

Key Achievements as Attorney General
In 2016, Josh Stein made history. He became the first Jewish person to win a statewide election in North Carolina.
In 2019, Stein was the first attorney general in the country to sue Juul. This e-cigarette company was sued for illegally marketing to young people. Stein won several agreements with Juul, totaling almost $48 million. This set an example for other states to follow.
Protecting Consumers and Rights
Stein worked to protect people from unwanted calls. He helped create Anti-Robocall Principles with other attorneys general and phone companies. He also started "Operation Silver Shield." This program helps protect older North Carolinians from fraud and scams.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Stein took action against price-gouging. He investigated companies that raised prices too much on items like hand sanitizer and masks. He won over $1 million in these price-gouging cases.
Stein also supported the Affordable Care Act. He filed legal papers to support it in the United States Supreme Court. He also supported women's access to healthcare.
Governor of North Carolina
Winning the Election
On January 18, 2023, Josh Stein announced he would run for governor of North Carolina. He received support from Governor Roy Cooper and many other leaders.
He won the Democratic nomination. In the general election, he faced Republican lieutenant governor Mark Robinson. Stein won the election by a large margin of 14.8%. This was a much bigger win than his previous statewide elections.

On January 1, 2025, Josh Stein was sworn in as the 76th governor of North Carolina. He is the first Jewish governor in the state's history.
Personal Life
Josh Stein is married to Anna Harris Stein. They have three children together. His family belongs to Temple Beth Or, a Reform synagogue in Raleigh. He has also coached youth sports teams, including YMCA basketball and J.C.C. soccer. In May 2025, his high school soccer team from 1983 was honored. They were inducted into the Chapel Hill High School Hall of Fame.
