Joshua Brewster Bolten (born August 16, 1954) is an American lawyer and government official. He is known for his important roles in the United States government.
Bolten served as the White House Chief of Staff for U.S. President George W. Bush. This is a very powerful job, like being the president's main helper and manager. He took on this role on April 14, 2006. Before that, he was in charge of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) from 2003 to 2006. The OMB helps the president manage the government's money and plans.
Since 2017, he has been the president and CEO of the Business Roundtable. This is a group of top business leaders who work to improve the U.S. economy.

Early Life and School
Josh Bolten grew up in a Jewish family. His father worked for the CIA, which is a U.S. government agency that gathers information about other countries. His mother taught history at George Washington University.
He went to St. Albans School in Washington, D.C. After high school, he studied at Princeton University. He focused on public and international affairs. He was also his class president.
Later, Bolten earned a law degree from Stanford Law School in 1980. While there, he helped edit the law review, a journal for legal articles.

Working in Government
Bolten has had many important jobs in the U.S. government.
Under President George H.W. Bush (1989–1993), he worked on trade issues for three years. He also helped the president with laws for one year.
From 1994 to 1999, Bolten worked for Goldman Sachs in London. This is a big company that deals with money and investments.
In 2000, he helped with George W. Bush's campaign to become president.
Roles Under President George W. Bush
When George W. Bush became president, Bolten took on several key roles:
- Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy (2001–2003): He helped create and manage the president's plans and ideas.
- Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) (2003–2006): He was in charge of the government's budget and how money was spent.
- White House Chief of Staff (2006–2009): This was his most important role. He was the president's top advisor and managed the White House staff. He was the second Jewish person to hold this position.
As Chief of Staff, Bolten helped bring many talented people into the government. For example, he asked Henry M. Paulson, Jr. to become the Secretary of the Treasury. He also brought in Tony Snow as the White House press secretary.
Later Career
After leaving the White House in 2009, Bolten taught at Princeton University. He taught classes about the government's budget and world trade.
In 2010, he became a leader of the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund. This group raised money to help Haiti after a big earthquake in 2010.
In 2011, Bolten started his own company called Rock Creek Global Advisors. It was a company that advised on economic and government rules. He worked there until 2017.
In January 2017, Bolten became the president and CEO of the Business Roundtable. This group works to support businesses and the economy in the United States.
Personal Life
Josh Bolten enjoys playing music. He plays the bass guitar in a band called The Compassionates. In 2015, he married Ann Kelly.
