Joshua Brewster Bolten, born on August 16, 1954, is an American lawyer and politician. He is well-known for his work in the United States government. Mr. Bolten served as the White House Chief of Staff for President George W. Bush. This important role helps manage the President's daily activities. Before that, he was the director of the Office of Management and Budget. Since 2017, he has led the Business Roundtable, a group of top business leaders.

Early Life and Education
Growing Up and School
Josh Bolten is Jewish. His father, Seymour Bolten, worked for the CIA, a government agency. His mother, Analouise Bolten, taught world history at George Washington University. Josh went to St. Albans School. He was also on the school's board until 2007.
College and Law School
Bolten attended Princeton University. He studied at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. While there, he was class president and president of The Ivy Club. He graduated from Princeton in 1976.
He then went to Stanford Law School and earned his law degree in 1980. During his time at law school, he was an editor for the law review.
Career in Government and Business
Working for Presidents
Under President George H.W. Bush, Josh Bolten held important roles. For three years, he was a general counsel for the U.S. Trade Representative. He also served as a deputy assistant to the president for legislative affairs for one year.
From 1994 to 1999, Bolten worked at Goldman Sachs in London. He was the executive director for legal and government affairs. In 2000, he became the policy director for George W. Bush's presidential campaign.
Roles in the George W. Bush Administration
When George W. Bush became president, Bolten joined his team. From 2001 to 2003, he was the deputy chief of staff for policy at the White House. This role involved helping to shape government plans.
He then served as the director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) from 2004 to 2006. The OMB helps the president manage the government's budget. In 2006, he was appointed as the White House Chief of Staff. This is one of the most powerful positions in the White House. He was the second Jewish person to hold this top job.

Bolten was the White House Chief of Staff from 2006 until 2009. During his time, he helped bring many talented people into the government. For example, he recruited Henry Paulson to be the Treasury Secretary. He also brought in Tony Snow as the White House press secretary.
Later Career and Current Work
After leaving the White House, Bolten continued his work in public service and business. In September 2009, he became a visiting professor at the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs. He taught courses on the federal budget and international trade.
In March 2010, Bolten became a member and co-chair of the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund. This fund raised money to help Haiti after a big earthquake in 2010.
In July 2011, Bolten helped start a company called Rock Creek Global Advisors. This company advises on economic and policy matters. He worked there as a managing director until 2017.
In January 2017, Josh Bolten became the president and CEO of the Business Roundtable. This is a group of important business leaders who work to improve the economy. He is also currently serving on the board of trustees for Princeton University.
Personal Life
Josh Bolten enjoys playing bass guitar in a band called The Compassionates. In 2015, he married Ann Kelly.
