In January 2009, Josip signed a long contract with Dinamo Zagreb. He continued to play for Lokomotiva on loan until the middle of 2012.
Returning to Dinamo Zagreb
In January 2012, Pivarić came back to Dinamo Zagreb's senior squad. He played his first game for Dinamo on February 25, 2012. It was a great start, as Dinamo won the match 3-0 against Karlovac. He scored his first goal for Dinamo on April 21, 2012, in a 1-1 draw against Rijeka.
A very memorable moment for Pivarić and Dinamo was in September 2015. He scored the first goal in a big 2-1 win against Arsenal in the 2015–16 UEFA Champions League, which is a huge European competition.
In January 2016, Josip got a serious knee injury during a friendly game. This meant he couldn't play for the rest of that season. He also missed out on being chosen for the UEFA Euro 2016 national team. Luckily, he returned to play on July 6, 2016, in a friendly match.

On August 8, 2017, Josip Pivarić signed a three-year contract with Dynamo Kyiv, a big club in Ukraine.
