Early Military Life (1837-1859)
José Cabrinetty started his military career very young. He was only fourteen years old. He fought in the last battles of the First Carlist War. This war was a conflict over who should rule Spain.
Cabrinetty fought in places like the Basque Country. He also helped capture towns such as Aliaga, Morella, and Berga. He served under important generals like Leopoldo O'Donnell and Baldomero Espartero. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a second lieutenant. When General Espartero had to leave Spain, Cabrinetty went with him.
Fighting in the Hispano-Moroccan War (1859-1860)
In 1847, Cabrinetty returned to Spain. He rejoined the army as a lieutenant. In 1859, he was promoted to captain. He then took part in the Hispano-Moroccan War (1859–1860). This was a conflict between Spain and Morocco.
One of the important battles he fought in was the Battle of Los Castillejos. This battle was a significant victory for the Spanish forces.
Role in the Third Carlist War (1872-1873)
By 1872, the Third Carlist War began. José Cabrinetty was a lieutenant colonel at this time. He was quickly promoted to Brigadier. This was a very important leadership role.
He first fought in the Penedès region of Spain. Then, he moved to the areas around Girona. Finally, he became the general commander for the province of Lleida. In 1873, he successfully freed Puigcerdá from a Carlist attack.
Battle of Alpens and Legacy
Cabrinetty tirelessly chased the Carlist leader Francisco Savalls. However, on July 9, 1873, Savalls defeated him at the Battle of Alpens. During this battle, Cabrinetty was shot and killed. He was riding into the town square when he was hit. Some people believed he might have been killed by his own soldiers.
News of the government's defeat at Alpens spread quickly. The death of Brigadier Cabrinetty shocked many. Two days later, on July 11, 1873, large protests happened in Barcelona. These protests were against the Carlists and supported the Republic. Cabrinetty became a symbol for those who believed in a different future for Spain.
