José Enrique Sánchez Díaz (born January 23, 1986), known simply as José Enrique, is a former Spanish footballer. He played as a left-back, which is a defensive position on the football field.
José Enrique was born in Valencia, Spain. He started his football career in Spain before moving to England. He played for two big English clubs, Newcastle United and Liverpool. He retired from playing football in 2017 due to an injury.

José Enrique's Football Career
Early Days in Spain
José Enrique began his football journey at Levante. After that, he joined their city rivals, Valencia. He also played for other Spanish teams like Celta and Villarreal. These teams play in La Liga, which is Spain's top football league.
Playing in England: Newcastle United
In 2007, José Enrique moved to England. He joined Newcastle United. He played many games for them as a strong left-back. During his time there, Newcastle United won the Football League Championship in the 2009–10 season. This win helped them get promoted back to the Premier League, England's highest football league.
Time at Liverpool F.C.
After four years with Newcastle, José Enrique moved to Liverpool in 2011. He continued to play as a left-back for this famous club. With Liverpool, he won the League Cup in the 2011–12 season. This was a big achievement for him and the team. He also played in the FA Cup final in the same year, but Liverpool lost that match. He made 76 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 2 goals.
Return to Spain and Retirement
After his time in England, José Enrique returned to Spain. He played for Real Zaragoza for one year. Sadly, he had to retire from football in 2017 because of an injury.
Health and Recovery
In May 2018, José Enrique shared that he had been diagnosed with a rare type of brain tumor called chordoma. This was a very difficult time for him. However, he received treatment and worked hard on his recovery. In April 2019, he announced that he had fully recovered and was given the all-clear. This was great news for him and his fans.
