José Hernández was born in Tangier, Morocco, in 1944. He had his very first art show in Tangier in 1962. He was only 17 years old! People quickly noticed his talent, and he became part of the art scene there. A writer named Emilio Sanz once said that young José loved to draw "angry cats" and was always dreaming up new ideas. His early drawings often showed dream-like scenes.
In 1964, when he was 20, José moved to Madrid, Spain. From 1967 onwards, he focused more on his graphic art. This means he created many illustrations and engravings. He made pictures for famous books by writers like James Joyce, Arthur Rimbaud, and Federico García Lorca. He also illustrated works by Franz Kafka and Luis Buñuel.
José Hernández was friends with the famous film director Carlos Saura. He even appeared in a movie called Weeping for a Bandit with his friends Pablo Runyan and Luis Buñuel. He played the part of a young boy in the film.
Since 1974, José also worked a lot in theater. He was a set designer, which means he designed the backgrounds and scenery for plays. He was also a costume designer, creating the clothes the actors wore. He worked on many plays by famous writers like Miguel de Cervantes and José Zorrilla. He also designed for operas, which are plays where the story is sung.
Awards and Recognition
José Hernández received many important awards for his art. These awards showed how much people appreciated his unique style and hard work.
- 1981: He won the National Prize for Plastic Arts in Madrid, Spain. This is a very important award for artists in Spain.
- He also received the International Biella Prize for Engraving in Italy.
- He was given a Medal of Honor at the 12th International Exhibition of Modern Ex Libris in Malbork, Poland.
- He received another Medal of Honor from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Santa Isabel de Hungría in Seville.
- He became a full member of the European Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Letters in Paris.
- 2006: He won the National Prize for Graphic Art.
