José Enrique Jerí Oré, born on November 13, 1986, is a Peruvian politician and lawyer. He served as the 65th President of Peru from October 2025 to February 2026. He became president after his predecessor, Dina Boluarte, was removed from office by Congress.
Before becoming president, Jerí was the President of the Congress of the Republic from July to October 2025. He had been a member of the Congress for Lima since 2021, representing the We Are Peru party. At 38 years old, he was one of Peru's youngest presidents. He was also the first president from the "millennial" generation.
Jerí was first elected to Congress as a replacement for Martín Vizcarra. Vizcarra had been prevented from holding his seat due to a controversy involving vaccines. Jerí was part of the centrist We Are Peru party. In July 2025, he was chosen as President of the Congress. This happened with support from several political parties. Later, questions were raised about his personal finances.
After President Dina Boluarte was removed from office on October 10, 2025, Jerí became president. This happened during a time of protests in Peru. In his first speech, Jerí promised to lead a government focused on "transition, empathy, and national reconciliation." He also said the country needed to "declare war on crime." After serving for four months, Jerí was removed from office by the Peruvian Congress on February 17, 2026. This followed concerns about undisclosed meetings with a Chinese businessman.

Who is José Jerí? A Leader in Peru
Early Life and Education
José Jerí was born on November 13, 1986, in the Jesús María District of Lima, Peru. He studied law at the Federico Villarreal National University, earning his bachelor's degree in 2014. The next year, he completed his law degree at the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega University.
From 2019 to 2020, he worked in the government of the Department of Ancash. He also served as a general secretary there. In 2020, he was an advisor to the We Are Peru group in the Congress.
Beginning His Political Journey
Since 2013, José Jerí has been a member of the political party We Are Peru. He held roles like youth secretary and legal representative. Since September 2021, he has been the party's first vice president.
His first attempt at politics was in the 2013 local elections for the Lima Municipality council. He ran again in 2014 but was not elected. From 2015 to 2016, he was part of a group of parties called the Alliance for the Progress of Peru. His party, We Are Peru, was a member of this alliance.
Serving as a Congressman
In the 2021 national elections, José Jerí ran for Congress for the We Are Peru party in Lima. Even though he received a moderate number of votes, he was elected. This was because the winning candidate, former president Martín Vizcarra, was prevented from holding public office due to a controversy. Jerí then served in Congress from 2021 to 2026.
In July 2021, he tried to become President of Congress but was not successful.
During the process to remove President Pedro Castillo from office, Jerí voted in favor of his removal. Castillo was removed by Congress on December 7, 2022, due to serious concerns about his ability to lead.
Jerí led the Budget Committee during the 2023–2024 legislative year. He also served as a spokesperson for the We Are Peru party. He supported actions that ended some investigations into Dina Boluarte.
Becoming President of Congress
On July 26, 2025, José Jerí was elected as the President of the Congress of the Republic. He was chosen to lead Congress for the 2025–2026 session. Several parties, including Free Peru, Popular Force, and We Are Peru, voted for him.
After his election as President of Congress, Jerí spoke to the Peruvian newspaper El Comercio. He said he would not want to become president of the country if the current president, Dina Boluarte, were removed. He stated:
“I was elected to be President of Congress. I’m not going to say I’m unaware of the procedures of constitutional succession, right? But from my perspective, the presidency should be constitutionally renewed on July 28, 2026. If that scenario you mention were to occur, I would personally refrain from assuming it.”

Taking on the Role of President
On October 10, 2025, President Dina Boluarte was removed from office by Congress. This happened during widespread 2025 Peruvian protests and after various political challenges. Since Boluarte had no vice presidents, José Jerí, as the head of Congress, became the next in line to be President of Peru. He was the eighth person to serve as president since 2018.
In his first speech as president, Jerí promised to create a government focused on "transition, empathy, and national reconciliation." He also declared that the nation "must declare war on crime."
Even after President Boluarte's removal, Congress did not remove Prime Minister Eduardo Arana Ysa. This meant that the government team from Boluarte's time continued under President Jerí.
Facing Challenges and Protests
On October 15, 2025, large protests took place across the country. People were upset about crime and corruption. Some of these protests became violent. The government then declared a state of emergency to help control the situation.
On November 28, Jerí declared another state of emergency. This was in areas along the Chile–Peru border. It was in response to many migrants, mainly Venezuelans, trying to enter Peru from Chile.
His Removal from Office
On February 14, 2026, new questions arose about José Jerí's financial dealings and meetings with certain business people. Just three days later, on February 17, Jerí was removed from the presidency by the Peruvian Congress. This decision came after a vote of 75 to 24. He was removed because he did not reveal meetings with Chinese businessmen who were being watched by the government. He served as president for only four months. Congress was to appoint his successor.
What Were José Jerí's Political Ideas?
José Jerí is often described as a conservative leader who uses practical approaches. He has said that he doesn't see himself as strictly "right-wing" or "left-wing." Instead, he focuses on what works best for the country. Jerí supports animal rights. In terms of the economy, he believes in economic liberalism. This means he favors policies that reduce government rules and encourage private businesses to invest.
