José Manuel Campa Fernández (born 20 July 1964) is a Spanish economist and professor. He is known for his work in finance and government. Since May 2019, he has been the leader of the European Banking Authority. Before this, he held important roles at Santander Bank and in the Government of Spain.

Early Life and Education

José Manuel Campa was born in Oviedo, Spain, on 20 July 1964. He studied at the University of Oviedo, where he earned degrees in both law and economics. Later, he continued his studies at Harvard University in the United States. There, he received a special advanced degree called a PhD in economics. A PhD means he did a lot of advanced research in his field.

Working for the Spanish Government

From 14 May 2009 to 23 December 2011, Mr. Campa worked for the Spanish government. He served as the 10th Secretary of State for Economy. In this important role, he helped manage Spain's economy. He worked under the leadership of Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero.

Teaching and Advising

Before his government job, Mr. Campa was a finance professor. He taught at the IESE Business School, which is part of the University of Navarre. He also gave advice to many big international groups. These included the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and the European Commission. These organizations help countries around the world with their money and development.

Role at Santander Bank

In 2014, José Manuel Campa joined Santander Bank. He became the Director of Investor Relations and Analysts. This meant he helped connect the bank with its investors. He also continued to teach finance as a visiting professor at IESE Business School.

Leading the European Banking Authority

On 19 February 2019, Mr. Campa was chosen to lead the European Banking Authority (EBA). The EBA is an important organization in Europe. It helps make sure that banks are safe and stable. The European Parliament approved his nomination on 14 March 2019. He officially started his role as Chairperson on 1 May 2019. In February 2024, the European Council decided that Mr. Campa should continue leading the EBA for another five years. His current term will last until May 2029.
