Life as an Artist

A Full Life

José Pinazo Martínez was born in Rome, Italy. His father, Ignacio Pinazo Camarlench, was also a painter. He was studying in Rome when José was born. When José was two years old, his family moved back to Spain. They settled in the city of Valencia. His brother, Ignacio Pinazo Martínez [es], who became a sculptor, was born there in 1883.

Since his father was an artist, José became interested in painting early on. He began learning from his father. Later, he went to the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Carlos de Valencia. In 1895, when he was only sixteen, he showed his first painting at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. He received an honorable mention for his work. He also won a silver medal at the Exposition Universelle (1900) in Paris.

Later, José moved to Madrid to continue his painting career. In 1906, he traveled a lot between Paris, London, and Rome. The next year, he married Magdalena Mitjans. They had two daughters together.

In Madrid, important art critics noticed his work. One critic, José Francés [es], wrote that Pinazo had reached his best artistic level in 1910. This was with his painting called "A Plena Vida" (A Full Life). In 1915, Pinazo won a top prize at the National Exhibition for his large painting "Floreal." His wife, Magdalena, was the model for this painting. He also showed his art in international exhibitions, including ones in Panama and St. Louis.

Around 1918, Pinazo Martínez changed his painting style. He moved away from modernism and naturalism. He started using a simpler approach in his art. In 1920, he visited the United States. He didn't have much success there at first. But his wife, Magdalena, helped him arrange a show in New York. It was at the Gimpel and Wildenstein gallery. The next year, he spent a long time in Cuba. He had a show there and received many requests for paintings.

In 1925, he had his last solo art show in Madrid. After that, he focused on selling his art to buyers outside of Spain. Many of his buyers were in Buenos Aires. In 1929, he received a big request from Archer Milton Huntington. This was for the Hispanic Society of America. He also had smaller shows at the Carnegie Institute in 1930 and the Art Institute of Chicago in 1931.

In the summer of 1933, José Pinazo Martínez became very sick while on vacation. He developed a serious infection called sepsis. This illness sadly led to his death. He passed away on December 2, 1933.
