Early Life and Education
Joy Tivy was born in Carlow, Ireland. Her birthday was on August 24, 1924.
She started studying at University College Dublin in 1942. Her main subject was geography. She also studied botany (plants) and geology (rocks and Earth). Joy was a brilliant student. In 1944, she scored highest in tough exams. This made her a special Scholar. She graduated in 1946 with top honors.
After teaching briefly, she moved to the University of Edinburgh. There, she earned her doctorate degree. Her PhD looked at how nature affects plants on hills in Scotland.
A Career in Geography
In 1956, Joy Tivy joined the University of Glasgow. She stayed there for the rest of her career. She retired in 1989. In 1976, she became a professor. She was only the second woman to become a professor at the University of Glasgow. She also led the Department of Geography.
In 1984, she became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. This is a very respected group for scientists. She was also a Fellow of the Institute of Biology.
After retiring, she became a Fellow of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society. She was very active in the Scottish Field Studies Association. She was its chairperson for 10 years. She also edited the Scottish Geographical Magazine for a decade.

Honoring Her Legacy
The Royal Scottish Geographical Society created a special award. It is called the Joy Tivy Education Medal. This medal is given out every year. It honors someone who has made a great contribution to geography education.
