A Look Back in Time
After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a special area linked to the U.S., but not a state.
In 1899, the United States government counted all the people living in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census showed that 1,041 people lived in Juan Alonso at that time.
