Meet Juan 'Tuto' Sañudo: A Football Legend

Tuto's Amazing Football Journey

Juan Antonio Sañudo, known as 'Tuto', was born in Serdio, a small village in Spain. He became a professional footballer and played as a central defender. This means his main job was to stop the other team from scoring goals.

Playing in Spain's Top Leagues

Tuto played in La Liga, which is Spain's top football league. He played 304 matches over ten seasons. He was part of two main clubs: Racing de Santander and Real Oviedo.

He joined Racing Santander in 1978. His first game in Spain's top league was on 7 January 1979. Racing Santander won that home game against Valencia CF by a score of 3–1. Just 21 days later, he scored two goals in a league match. This helped his team beat FC Barcelona 2–1. However, that season, Racing Santander ended up moving down to a lower league.

Becoming a Top Defender

Tuto was a very good defender. In the 1985–86 season, he was even voted the best defender in La Liga! This helped Racing Santander finish in 12th place that year.

He also played one game in the UEFA Cup when he was 35 years old. This was on 3 October 1991, with Real Oviedo. They lost to Genoa CFC from Italy.

Tuto also played in the Segunda División, which is Spain's second-highest football league. He played for both Racing Santander and Real Oviedo in this league. For a while, he held the record for the most games played for Racing Santander in the top division. Later, other players like Pedro Munitis and José María Ceballos played more games.

Tuto retired from football at the end of the 1992–93 season. He was 37 years old. In his final season, he played a lot of minutes. He helped Racing Santander get promoted back to the main league for the third time.

Life After the Pitch: New Roles

After he stopped playing football, Tuto Sañudo started new careers. He worked as an insurance agent. He also worked in the lodging business, which means he helped manage places where people stay, like hotels.

He also stayed connected to football by becoming a commentator. He would talk about Racing Santander's matches for a radio station called Cadena COPE.

From Player to Club Chairman

On 31 January 2014, Tuto took on a very important role. He became the chairman of Racing Santander. The club was going through a very difficult time. It had big problems with its organization and money.

He worked hard to help the club. However, on 14 June 2015, he was replaced as chairman. Another former player of the club, Manolo Higuera, took over the role.
