The Life of Juan Castellar y de Borja
Early Life and Family
Juan Castellar y de Borja was born in Valencia, Spain, in late 1441. His father was Galcerán de Castellar, who was the señor (lord) of Picassent and Alcàsser. His mother was Bernardona Borja. The Castellar family was connected to the famous Borja family. Juan was also a cousin to another important cardinal, Juan de Borja Lanzol de Romaní.
Starting His Church Career
Juan began his career in the church as a canon. A canon is a type of priest who works for a cathedral. He served at the Seville Cathedral in Spain. Later, he also became a canon at cathedrals in Naples, Toledo, and Burgos. After this, he moved to Rome, which is the center of the Catholic Church. There, he became a "protonotary apostolic," a high-ranking church official.
Becoming an Archbishop
On August 23, 1493, Juan Castellar y de Borja was chosen to be the Archbishop of Trani. This is a very important position in the church. In the same year, Pope Alexander VI also made him the governor of Perugia, a city in Italy. In 1502, he traveled with the Pope on a trip to Piombino, showing how trusted he was.
Becoming a Cardinal
Pope Alexander VI made Juan Castellar y de Borja a cardinal priest on May 31, 1503. Cardinals are very high-ranking officials in the Catholic Church, just below the Pope. As a cardinal, he was given a special church in Rome called Santa Maria in Trastevere on June 12, 1503.
On August 9, 1503, he was moved to another important role. He became the Archbishop of Monreale. He held this position until he passed away.
Choosing a New Pope
Juan Castellar y de Borja took part in two important meetings called papal conclaves. A conclave is when cardinals meet to choose a new Pope. He was there for the conclave in September 1503, which elected Pope Pius III. He also participated in the conclave in October 1503, which elected Pope Julius II.
His Final Years
On July 7, 1504, Juan left Rome to visit Ferdinand II of Aragon, who was the King of Aragon. While in Valencia, he became sick. After several months, he died on January 1, 1505. He was buried in the Augustinian convent in Valencia.
