Juan Velasco Damas (born on May 17, 1977) is a Spanish former professional footballer. He played as a right-back, which is a defensive position on the field. After his playing career, he became a football manager.

During his career, Juan Velasco played for eight different clubs. He appeared in 213 matches in La Liga, Spain's top football league, scoring one goal. He also played football in England and Greece. Velasco also represented the Spanish national team at UEFA Euro 2000.

Playing Career Highlights

Juan Velasco was born in Dos Hermanas, a town in Spain. He started his professional football journey with Sevilla FC, a big club in his home region.

Early Years at Sevilla

Velasco played 13 matches for Sevilla in the 1996–97 season. His first league game was on March 5, 1997. In the next two years, he played 72 official matches. He helped Sevilla get promoted back to the top league in the 1998–99 season.

Success with Celta Vigo

After helping Sevilla, Velasco joined RC Celta de Vigo. This was a very successful time for him. In the 2002–03 season, he played 31 games. He helped Celta qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the first time ever. However, in the next season, Celta was relegated from the top division. Velasco scored his only goal in La Liga on January 4, 2000, in a 1–1 draw against Valencia CF.

Later Club Adventures

Velasco then spent three years playing for Atlético Madrid (two seasons) and RCD Espanyol (one season). He played about 22 matches each season. On February 18, 2008, he signed a three-month contract with Norwich City in England. This was after a successful trial. After the season, he moved to Panthrakikos FC in Greece. This club had just been promoted to the Super League Greece.

In January 2010, Velasco moved to another Greek team, Athlitiki Enosi Larissa FC. He retired from playing football in June 2011, when he was 34 years old.

International Appearances

Juan Velasco played five times for the Spanish national team. His first game was on January 26, 2000. It was a friendly match against Poland in Cartagena, which Spain won 3–0. He was chosen to be part of the squad for UEFA Euro 2000, but he did not play in any matches during the tournament.

Managerial Career

After retiring as a player, Velasco returned to football in 2013. He became the manager of Xerez CD B. On October 13, 2016, he was appointed head coach of Extremadura UD, a team in Spain's Segunda División B. He has also managed youth teams at Sevilla FC and other clubs like CD Alcalá, UE Santa Coloma, and Inter Club d'Escaldes.
