Juan del Río Martín (born October 14, 1947 – died January 28, 2021) was an important Spanish Archbishop. He served as the Military Ordinary of Spain from 2008 until he passed away in 2021. This means he was the main religious leader for people in the Spanish military.
His Journey to Becoming a Bishop
Juan del Río Martín finished high school in his hometown in 1964. He then went to the Seminary of Seville in 1965. A seminary is a special school where people study to become priests. There, he studied Philosophy and Theology until 1973.
In 1975, he earned a degree in social studies from the University of Granada. Later, in 1979, he went to Rome to study at the Pontifical Gregorian University. He earned a degree in Dogmatic Theology, which is a deep study of religious beliefs. He also got a Ph.D. in this field. His Ph.D. paper was about the religious ideas of Saint John of Avila.
Becoming a Priest and Bishop
Juan del Río Martín became a priest on February 2, 1974, in Seville. He worked as a priest in the Archdiocese of Seville, which is a large area managed by an archbishop.
On June 29, 2000, Pope John Paul II chose him to be the second bishop of the Diocese of Asidonia-Jerez. A bishop is a high-ranking religious leader. He was officially made a bishop on September 23 of that year by Manuel Monteiro de Castro, who was the Pope's representative in Spain.
Later, on June 30, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him as the Military Ordinary of Spain. This was a very important role, making him the spiritual leader for all military personnel in Spain.
His Passing
On January 21, 2021, Juan del Río Martín was admitted to the Gómez Ulla Military Hospital in Madrid. He had become sick with COVID-19 during the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain.
At first, reports said he was getting better. However, his health quickly got worse. He sadly passed away from the illness on January 27, 2021.
