Strömsdal - Pehr Adolf Kruskopf - Finland framställdt i teckningar - 83
An old drawing of the Strömsdal ironworks in Juankoski, from a book published in the 1840s and 1850s.

Juankoski was once a town and a municipality in Finland. A municipality is like a local government area. In March 2014, the local government of Juankoski decided something big. They voted for Juankoski to join with a larger city called Kuopio. This change happened at the start of 2017.

Juankoski is located in the eastern part of Finland. It is part of a larger area known as the Northern Savonia region. The total area of Juankoski was about 586 square kilometers. A big part of this area, about 121 square kilometers, was covered by water. Juankoski officially became a town in 1998.

The places that used to be next to Juankoski include Juuka, Kaavi, Tuusniemi, Kuopio, Nilsiä, and Rautavaara. The people who lived in Juankoski spoke only Finnish.

A Look Back: History of Juankoski

The story of Juankoski began in 1746. A person named Brynolf Brunou started an ironworks there. An ironworks is a factory where iron is made and shaped. This factory was built near some fast-flowing water, called rapids, between two lakes named Vuotjärvi and Akonvesi.

At that time, the area was part of a small church community called Nilsiä. Nilsiä was part of a bigger church area, the Kuopio parish. Later, Nilsiä became its own separate church area in 1816. It then became its own municipality in 1869.

Juankoski moved to the Muuruvesi church area in 1907. It stayed there until 1923, when Juankoski became its own separate municipality. In 1971, two other municipalities, Muuruvesi and Säyneinen, joined together with Juankoski. This is called consolidation, meaning they combined to form one larger area.

Finally, in 2017, Juankoski itself joined with the city of Kuopio. This means Juankoski is now part of the larger Kuopio city area.
