As of 31 December 2023, about 4,259 people live there. The area is quite large, covering 1,846.58 square kilometres (712.97 sq mi). A big part of this area, 344.78 km2 (133.12 sq mi), is water! Most people in Juuka speak Finnish.

Juuka shares its borders with several other municipalities. These are like its neighbors on a map. Its current neighbors include Kuopio, Kaavi, Kontiolahti, Lieksa, Nurmes, Polvijärvi, and Rautavaara. Some municipalities that used to be neighbors have since joined other larger areas.
What Does "Juuka" Mean?
The name "Juuka" has a special meaning. It means "a river that flows through a lake."
People have lived in the village of Juuka for a very long time, since the 1500s! Later, in the 1800s, more people moved here. They built homes near roads and opened shops by the beautiful Lake Pielinen.
Juuka became its own church parish in 1873. The main church you see today was finished in the 1850s. But before that, there were two older churches in the area.
Juuan Elli: A Fun Local Event
Ellinpäivät is a special four-day event in Juuka. During these days, different groups, communities, and businesses in Juuka put on fun activities for everyone.
To find out what's happening, you can check the local newspaper, Vaarojen Sanomat. It has all the information and a timetable for the events. A special board chooses the people who organize this big event each year.
"Elli" refers to the main person or "figurehead" of the event. A new Elli is chosen every year!
The events can include exciting things like:
- Concerts with live music
- Market events where you can find cool stuff
- The announcement of the new Elli
- A new event called "Juuret Juuassa –ryhmän Rehvit." This is basically a car show! You can see many cool old-fashioned cars and meet their drivers. That's why some people call it a "rally for older youngsters."
