Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Judith Gay West, born in 1949, is an important Australian scientist. She is currently the executive director of the Australian National Botanic Gardens. Dr. West has a special degree called a doctor of philosophy (PhD) in botany. Her PhD research was about a group of plants called Dodonaea in Australia. She finished her PhD in 1981 at the University of Adelaide in South Australia.

Before her PhD, Dr. West earned her Bachelor of Science degree in 1970 from the University of Sydney in New South Wales. She studied Botany (the study of plants) and Zoology (the study of animals). In 1972, she completed her Bachelor of Science with honours, focusing on Botany, also at the University of Sydney.

Dr. West has played a key role in making Australian plant systematics more well-known. Plant systematics is about identifying, naming, and classifying plants. She has done this by being part of many national and international groups and committees.

Her main research focuses on the plant systematics of Australian plants. She looks at how plants are built (their morphology), how they reproduce, and their genetic information (molecular data). Dr. West likes to share her research. She helps create interactive tools to identify important Australian plant groups, like eucalypts, legumes, grevilleas, orchids, and plants from tropical rainforests.

In 1988, she worked as the Australian Botanical Liaison Officer at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in the United Kingdom. This role meant she represented Australian plant collections overseas.
