Jukka's Early Life and Music
Jukka grew up in the town of Kitee, Finland. When he was in school, his music teacher noticed his potential. The teacher told him about a new music program opening up. He thought Jukka would be a great fit as a drummer.
Jukka didn't have a perfect place to practice drums at home. But he made it work! His very first band was called "The Highway." Later, when he was about 15 or 16 years old, he joined his first serious band. This band had a rehearsal space, but they could only practice a few days a week.
After leaving that band, Jukka teamed up with another musician named Emppu Vuorinen. Together, they found a permanent place to practice their music. Jukka and Emppu played in bands like Ambrosia and Nidhro't before they formed Nightwish.
Jukka lives with his family in Joensuu, Finland. He has a wife named Satu. They have three children: a daughter named Luna (born in 2003), a son named Niki (born in 2005), and another daughter named Lara (born in 2010). Jukka is also a vegetarian.
Jukka's Music Career
After Nightwish started, Jukka got a brand new, professional drum kit. He used this special kit for many years. It was featured on albums like Wishmaster and during the entire Once world tour, which ended in 2005. Jukka used drums from Tama, cymbals from Paiste, and drumsticks from Pro-Mark.
Jukka was also part of a side project called Sethian. This band is not active anymore because the members are busy with their other music groups.
Taking a Break from Nightwish
On August 6, 2014, an announcement was made. Jukka would not be able to play drums on Nightwish's eighth album. He also couldn't join the tour for that album. This was because he was dealing with insomnia, which is a sleep disorder that makes it hard to sleep. The album, Endless Forms Most Beautiful, was the first Nightwish album without him playing drums.
Even though he wasn't playing, Jukka still helped the band. He managed their daily business behind the scenes. Another drummer, Kai Hahto from the band Wintersun, took Jukka's place for the album and the tour.
Jukka did return to play one song with Nightwish in August 2016. This was during their unofficial 20th-anniversary concert in Jämsä, Finland.
Jukka's New Role
In July 2019, Jukka shared an important message. He announced that he would not be returning as Nightwish's full-time drummer. Instead, he would continue to work with the band behind the scenes. Kai Hahto then officially became Nightwish's new permanent drummer.
