Emppu's Life and Music Journey
Starting His Music Path
Emppu Vuorinen began playing guitar as a fun hobby when he was ten. He already knew Jukka Nevalainen from elementary school. Later, he met Tuomas Holopainen at a concert.
When Tuomas Holopainen decided to start a new band, he asked Emppu to join. This new band was called Nightwish. At first, Nightwish was an acoustic music project. They asked Tarja Turunen to sing for just three songs.
Beyond Music: Judo Skills
Did you know Emppu is also good at sports? He has a black belt in judo. This means he has reached a very high level in this martial art.
He even won a bronze medal at the Nordic youth championship. He also won two gold medals at the Finnish youth championship.
Working in the Studio
Emppu has his own recording studio in a place called Kerava. He shares this studio with Tero Kinnunen. Emppu and another musician, Marko Hietala, even received a special cultural award from Kerava. This award was for their great contributions to music.
Emppu's Bands and Guitar Style
How Nightwish Began
Before Nightwish, Emppu and Jukka Nevalainen played together in bands called Ambrosia and Nidhro't.
Emppu and Tuomas Holopainen officially started Nightwish in 1996. They formed the band with singer Tarja Turunen.
Playing Guitar in Nightwish
In Nightwish, Emppu usually plays the rhythm guitar. This means he plays the chords and main patterns that support the song. He often helps the keyboard or orchestra parts sound bigger.
But he also plays lead melodies and guitar solos. His solos are often very melodic, meaning they have a clear, beautiful tune. Sometimes he uses special techniques like alternate picking or tapping. He also uses the whammy bar on his guitar to make cool sounds.
Emppu's guitar work was more prominent in Nightwish's first three albums. Later, the songs featured more of the band's overall sound.
Writing Songs
Emppu is also a creative part of Nightwish. He has helped write songs with Tuomas Holopainen. They worked together on songs from the album Oceanborn all the way to Dark Passion Play.
Emppu even wrote one song all by himself! It's called "Whoever Brings The Night" and is on the Dark Passion Play album.
Emppu has said that when he was younger, he felt more of a need to show off his guitar skills. But now, he plays what the song needs. He focuses on making the music sound good and fit the mood of the song.
Other Bands and Projects
Emppu has also played guitar for other bands. He recorded guitar parts for Almah, a metal band from Brazil. He did this to help his friend, singer Edu Falaschi. Emppu couldn't stay in Almah because he was too busy with Nightwish.
He also formed Brother Firetribe in 2002. This band plays a style of music called AOR, which is like classic rock. Emppu played on four albums with Brother Firetribe. These albums include False Metal (also known as Break Out), Heart Full of Fire, Diamond in the Firepit, and Sunbound.
In 2020, Emppu left Brother Firetribe because he didn't have enough time for both bands.
