Kitee is a town and a municipality in Finland. It is also known as Kides in Swedish. Kitee is located in the eastern part of Finland, in the North Karelia region. It is about 65 kilometers (40 miles) south of Joensuu. It is also about 175 kilometers (109 miles) northeast of Lappeenranta.

As of 31 December 2023, Kitee has a population of 9,689 people. The total area of Kitee is 1,724.41 square kilometres (665.80 sq mi). A large part of this area, 275.61 km2 (106.41 sq mi), is covered by water. The population density is about 7.73 inhabitants per square kilometre (20.0/sq mi). This means how many people live in each square kilometer.

The main language spoken in Kitee is Finnish. Kitee shares its borders with the municipalities of Parikkala, Rääkkylä, Savonlinna, and Tohmajärvi.

History of Kitee

Kitee was first established as a town in 1631. It officially gained its city rights much later, in 1992. This means it became a full city with more responsibilities and powers.

Sports in Kitee

Kitee has a well-known sports team called Kiteen Pallo -90. This team plays pesäpallo, which is a Finnish version of baseball. They compete in the top national league, called Superpesis. Their home games are played at a place called Shore Field.
