Jules Armand Stanislas Dufaure (born December 4, 1798 – died June 28, 1881) was an important French politician. He served as the Prime Minister of France three separate times.

Early Life and Career

Jules Dufaure was born in a town called Saujon in France. He started his career as a lawyer in Bordeaux. He became very well-known for his excellent speaking skills.

In 1834, Dufaure decided to enter politics and was elected as a deputy. A deputy is like a member of parliament. In 1839, he became the Minister of Public Works. In this role, he helped make it easier to build railways in France. This was a big step forward for the country's transportation.

Political Journey

After leaving his first government role in 1840, Dufaure became a leader in the political group known as the Opposition. This group disagreed with the government at the time.

When the French Revolution of 1848 happened, Dufaure supported the new Republic. He joined the group of moderate republicans, who wanted a balanced government. On October 13, he became the Minister of the Interior. This role is in charge of a country's internal affairs, like law enforcement. He left this job after Louis-Eugène Cavaignac lost the presidential election.

During the time of the Second French Empire, Dufaure stayed out of public politics. He went back to working as a lawyer in Paris. He was so successful that he was chosen as bâtonnier in 1862. This is a top position for lawyers in France.

Return to Politics and Prime Minister Roles

In 1863, Dufaure was chosen to join the Académie Française. This is a very respected group of people who are experts in the French language and literature.

In 1871, he became a member of the Assembly, which was like a new parliament. He suggested that Adolphe Thiers become the President of the Republic. Dufaure then became the Minister of Justice. He was part of the "left-centre" political group. During his time as Minister of Justice, a new law about juries was passed.

In 1873, he left his position when Thiers was no longer president. But in 1875, he returned to his old job as Minister of Justice. He then became the President of the Council on March 9, 1876. This role was similar to being the Prime Minister. Later that year, he was elected as a life senator, meaning he would be a senator for the rest of his life. He left the government on December 12 because of criticism from other politicians.

Dufaure returned to power on December 24, 1877. In early 1879, he helped convince Patrice MacMahon, duc de Magenta to resign as president. Soon after, on February 1, Dufaure himself retired from politics. He was tired from all the disagreements. For one day, on January 30, 1879, he served as the Acting President of the Republic while also being Prime Minister.
