Jules Sedney (born September 28, 1922 – died June 18, 2020) was an important politician from Suriname. He served as the Prime Minister of Suriname from 1969 to 1973. Later, he became the head of the Central Bank of Suriname in 1980. However, he left the country in 1983 due to a disagreement with Dési Bouterse. Sedney came back to Suriname in 1989.

Early Life and Education

Jules Sedney was born in Paramaribo, the capital city of Suriname. In 1939, when he was 17, he became a certified classroom assistant and started working. A few years later, in 1942, he passed an exam to become a customs officer in Paramaribo.

In 1948, Sedney moved to Amsterdam to study economics at the University of Amsterdam. While studying, he joined a group called Wie Eegie Sanie, which means "Our Own Things." This group was started by Eddy Bruma and worked to promote the Sranan Tongo language and Surinamese culture. Jules Sedney earned his doctorate degree in economic sciences in 1955.

Political Journey

Becoming a Minister

In 1958, Jules Sedney became the Minister of Finance for the NPS. This role meant he was in charge of the country's money and economy. Later, he joined a new party called the Progressive National Party (PNP). This party was started by Just Rens.

In the 1969 Surinamese general election, Sedney's party group came in third place. They then formed a government with the VHP group, which was led by Jagernath Lachmon. In 1961, Sedney suggested creating a scientific institute in Suriname. This idea later led to the founding of the University of Suriname, which is now known as the Anton de Kom University.

Leading as Prime Minister

From 1969 to 1973, Jules Sedney served as the Prime Minister of Suriname. He led a government that included people from different ethnic backgrounds. He believed this diverse government would help Suriname's economy grow.

In 1969, Sedney began the first steps towards Suriname becoming an independent country. He suggested forming a special "Kingdom Commission" to plan how Suriname would gain its independence. This commission started its work on January 5, 1972. However, Sedney later felt that the Dutch PvdA was moving too quickly. He believed that independence should have been planned more carefully over a longer period. He also worried about possible tensions between different ethnic groups in Suriname.

Central Bank and Exile

In 1980, Sedney became the governor of the Central Bank of Suriname. This meant he was in charge of the country's money supply and financial system. In 1983, he had a disagreement with Dési Bouterse about a loan and was removed from his position. In January 1983, he left Suriname and went to live in the Netherlands.

Sedney was allowed to return to Suriname in 1989.

Later Life and Legacy

Jules Sedney was known as the oldest bridge player in Suriname. In 1997, he wrote a book called De toekomst van ons verleden (The Future of Our Past). This book looked at the political history of Suriname from 1948 onwards. It also discussed how Suriname's democracy worked before the coup d'état and suggested ways to make democracy stronger. New versions of his book were published in 2010 and 2017.

In 2016, he received an honorary membership from the VHP. Also in 2016, the New Harbour in Paramaribo was renamed Dr Jules Sedney – Haven van Paramaribo. This was done to honor his important role in helping to establish the harbor.

Jules Sedney passed away on June 18, 2020, after being hospitalized.
