Julia Shammas Holter (born December 18, 1984) is an American musician, singer, and songwriter. She also produces music and composes. Julia is known for her unique style, which mixes different types of music like art pop, chamber pop, and ambient. Her music has been praised by critics.

She released her first official studio album, Tragedy, in 2011. This was followed by Ekstasis in 2012. Later, she signed with Domino Records. With Domino, she released several albums, including Loud City Song (2013), Have You in My Wilderness (2015), and Aviary (2018). Her most recent studio album, Something in the Room She Moves, came out in 2024. Julia Holter also creates music for films and works with other artists.

Julia Holter's Early Life and Education

Julia Holter was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. When she was six years old, her family moved to Los Angeles, California. She went to Alexander Hamilton High School there.

Julia loved music and studied it at the University of Michigan for four years. She earned a degree in composition, which means she learned how to write music. After seeing a performance by an avant-garde composer named Michael Pisaro, she was inspired. She decided to study with him at CalArts, where she completed another composition program.

Julia Holter's Musical Journey

Julia Holter started her music career by contributing songs to different compilation albums in 2008. In 2010, she began performing with singer Linda Perhacs. She also released a collection of live recordings.

First Albums and Early Success

Before her official debut, Julia released three albums on her own: Phaedra Runs to Russia (2007), Cookbook (2008), and Celebration (2010).

Her first official album, Tragedy, came out in August 2011. It was inspired by an ancient Greek play called Hippolytus. Critics liked the album, and NPR named it one of the "Best Outer Sound Albums of 2011."

In March 2012, Julia released her second album, Ekstasis. She spent three years making this album. Its title comes from a Greek word meaning "outside of oneself." Many people compared her music on this album to other famous artists like Kate Bush.

Signing with Domino Records and Chart Success

Julia Holter released her third album, Loud City Song, in August 2013. This was her first album with Domino Records. Unlike her earlier albums, which she mostly recorded alone, she worked with a group of musicians for Loud City Song. Critics loved this album.

In 2015, she released Have You in My Wilderness. This album was also highly praised and became her most successful album on the music charts. She also worked with the band Ducktails on their album St. Catherine.

Collaborations and Film Scores

Julia Holter has worked with many other musicians throughout her career. In 2016, she collaborated with the famous French electronic musician Jean-Michel Jarre.

In 2017, she created a special music score for the 1928 silent French film The Passion of Joan of Arc. She performed this score live in Los Angeles.

In 2020, Julia composed the music for the film Never Rarely Sometimes Always. She also released Behind the Wallpaper (2023) with Spektral Quartet and Alex Temple.

Recent Projects and Teaching

In September 2018, Julia announced her album Aviary. It was released in October and was praised for being very ambitious. Many music lists named it one of the best albums of 2018.

In 2021, Julia Holter started teaching at Occidental College in Los Angeles. She is a visiting assistant professor there, teaching songwriting.

Her sixth studio album, Something in the Room She Moves, was released in March 2024. She also appeared on her partner and bandmate Tashi Wada's album, What Is Not Strange?, in June 2024.

Julia Holter's Unique Music Style

Julia Holter's singing style has been compared to other unique female artists. The Guardian newspaper said her voice "faintly recalls Siouxsie Sioux or Nico". Under the Radar magazine also compared her to Siouxsie Sioux and Kate Bush, noting her intense and conversational voice.
